THE OBSERVATION BOOTH

OP / ED & PHOTO CREDITS ANDREA DIALECT

I recently began having problems with one of my feet, which was a telltale sign that my balance was off, amongst other things. My trip to the hospital assured me of it, and so did that new gangsta lean. Comfort had done it again. Lord knows I do enjoy all those moments being all hugged up. Comfort has been my go to since the beginning of my time. I had slowly been disconnecting though, shunning our shared space. Comfort had to get its own house. I thought it was for the best, but it does come over and often stays the night. Still weaning myself off the relationship. But now this balancing act seemingly is putting things in the proper perspective.

I ain’t saying that we still can’t be friends, so we will continue to chop it up sometimes, but it can’t live here no more, and it’s best that for now it don’t stop by. Getting on the good foot made me lean in, and it showed me that I had gone over to the left a whole lot more than I should, so now I’m heading back to the right.

Footwear, my favs, those black suede mid calf boots with the zippers on the side. My daily go to for quite some time. Wearing the same pair of comfortable shoes for too long. That experience led me to look more closely at the role the feet play in the body. The feet are not just for walking. They are the body’s foundation, and when they are not properly supported, the effects can travel upward into the ankles, knees, hips, and back. The feet are the body’s foundation.

FOOTWEAR…

The human foot is a complex structure made of many bones, joints, muscles, and ligaments designed to support body weight, absorb shock, and maintain balance. Because the feet are the body’s point of contact with the ground, even small changes in support or alignment can affect posture and the way we walk. Over time, poor support can lead to strain throughout the body.

Swelling in the feet can come from many causes, including standing or sitting too long, poor circulation, inflammation, excess weight, certain medications, or medical conditions. Even when the cause is not serious, swelling can affect comfort, balance, and movement and should not be ignored if it continues.

Footwear plays a major role in foot health. Shoes that are worn too long can lose cushioning and support, even if they still feel comfortable. Good everyday shoes should fit properly, provide arch support, have a stable heel, and allow enough room for the toes. Wearing the same pair every day, especially after the support has worn down, can cause the foot to shift and may lead to imbalance or pain.

Healthy foot practices include rotating shoes, replacing worn footwear, elevating the feet when swelling occurs, stretching the foot and ankle, and staying active to keep circulation moving. When swelling, pain, or balance problems continue, it is important to seek medical advice rather than ignore the signs.

The feet carry the weight of the entire body every day. When they are supported, the body moves with ease. When they are not, the whole system feels it. Taking care of the feet is not a small matter – it is caring for the foundation that holds everything else up.

DID YOU KNOW…

Balance comes from

  • The feet holding you up
  • The muscles keeping you steady
  • The ears guiding movement
  • The eyes helping you see position
  • The brain putting it all together

When one part is off, the whole body can feel off.
