Making Strides
I’d gotten the invite weeks ago. A simple plan – I was to meet Ms. Baker at Mulberry Commons, across from the Prudential Center in Newark, at around 9:45 a.m. She was performing Zumba for the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk 2025 in Newark – a 3-mile walk through downtown.
The turnout was nothing short of beautiful. Hundreds gathered in celebration – honoring the survivors, remembering those we’ve lost, and standing strong in the fight that continues.
After Jackie’s performance, we joined the crowd, moving in rhythm with our Caribbean brothers and sisters trailing behind and beside those oversized rolling speakers, peering beyond the constant sway of the flag. The energy was pure love – dancing, hugging, greeting one another mile after mile.
I was having such a good time that I didn’t get to capture many of those beautiful chance encounters. Still, I managed to capture a few of those perfect, unexpected moments – strangers connecting, spirits aligned. One mind, one heart – that’s how it should always be. That celebration of life reminded me of what truly matters. I pray it reminded us all. Blessings upon blessings to everyone that showed up – in body or in spirit.
