The New Jersey high school football season has reached the end of its first full month, with a few surprises.

First, a mega matchup took place between powerhouses Bergen Catholic and Don Bosco. The Ironmen of Bosco beat Bergen Catholic 14-9, scoring a win over their rival for the first time after BC won four straight. DB leads the all-time series 43-38-2, while Bergen Catholic had its 28 game winning streak snapped.

In Essex County action, a lot of teams were unable to light the scoreboard. First, East Orange squeezed Orange 47-0 in a tough loss for the Tornadoes, who are still looking for their first win of the season. Orange will have a chance to do so against Central High in their annual homecoming game this Friday night at Bell Stadium.

And then there was the game between Weequahic and West Side. It was a rivalry game that saw the Indians from Newark’s South Side beat the Rough Riders 24-0. In the end, both teams lost, as a brawl led to the schools being barred from postseason play.

Meanwhile, Cedar Grove blanked Newark Collegiate 48-0, while West Orange topped Barringer 39-0. Irvington defeating Columbia, but at least CHS scored in a 40-7 loss.

As for the pros, the New York Giants got their first win of the season and in the career of rookie QB Jaxson Dart thanks to an upset 21-18 win over the Chargers at MetLife Stadium. Among the highlights was a 1st quarter TD run by Dart to put the Giants up early. The celebration was short lived, as WR Malik Nabers was lost for the year with a torn ACL.

As for the other local team, the New York Jets went down to Florida and got dumped by the Dolphins 27-21. NY QB Justin Fields scored a touchdown, but has yet to win a game after being down two scores.

Next up, the Giants will be on the road against the winless New Orleans Saints, while the Jets will host the Cowboys, who are coming off a 40-40 tie against the Packers this past Sunday night.
