NEWARK – The fight over immigration just got elevated to an exponential level, with the top official in the state’s largest city getting placed in handcuffs.
Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka was arrested at the disputed Delaney Hall ICE detention center after he was accused of “making trespass” and “ignored warnings from Homeland Security officials to leave.”
The Mayor and other officials said that the facility in question had several violations of concern, but Trump Administration officials proceeded to use it anyway. Baraka and others were there to protest what was happening with the Newark building.
“The Mayor of Newark, Ras Baraka, committed trespass and ignored multiple warnings from Homeland Security Investigations to remove himself from the ICE detention center in Newark, New Jersey this afternoon. He has willingly chosen to disregard the law. That will not stand in this state. He has been taken into custody. NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW,” Interim U.S. Attorney General for New Jersey Alina Habba posted on X.
So far, “Local Talk” has not received any statement from Mayor Baraka’s office as of this posting. Also, “Local Talk” is looking to confirm if other officials were detained as well.
As of 5:20 p.m., Baraka was reportedly transferred to a location at 620 Frelinghuysen Avenue, with citizens sure to swing by in support. While Baraka is detained, Council President C. Larry Crump will be in charge of City affairs.
