This past Monday, the city of Newark hosted the first Annual Coretta Scott King Basketball Tournament.
In the first game of the doubleheader, #1 UCLA Bruins pounced Baylor 72-57. Star post player Lauren Betts led her team to the win with 24 points on 10-17 from the field and broke the school record for blocks in the game. UCLA jumped all over Baylor early with a 17-2 lead. The Bruins are 18-0 on the year, while Baylor dropped to 16-4.
In the second game, #7 Texas handled #8 Maryland 89-51. Leading Texas was Madison Booker with 28 points, while Kaylene Smikle led Maryland with 15 points and 4 rebounds. Texas outrebounded Maryland 35-28 and forced 27 turnovers.
Meanwhile, the rivalry between Seton Hall and St. John’s was renewed, with the Red Storm beating a struggling Pirates team 79-51. Leading St. John’s to victory was RJ Luis with 24 points and 8 rebounds. Zuby Ejiofor finished with 15 points and 9 rebounds. Leading Seton Hall was Isaiah Coleman with 11 points.
The big moment of the game saw the return of former Seton Hall point guard Kadary Richmond, who was a key player on the Pirates NIT championship team. He transferred to St. John’s but caught boos every time he got the basketball.
Overall, Seton Hall is 6-10 on the season and has won only one game in the Big East Conference.
Finally, congratulations are in order for the 14-2 Ohio State Buckeyes, who won the College Football Bowl Subdivision National Championship over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 34-23. Head coach Ryan Day will likely keep his job despite his lack of success against the rival Michigan Wolverines.
