The college basketball season has started in full force, and Seton Hall found out that it will not be easy. Fordham guard Jackie Johnson had 18 points, 3 rebounds and a last minute game winning shot to lead the Rams to a 57-56 upset on the road at Walsh Gym. Will Jackson added 11 points and 8 rebounds for Fordham.
Leading the Pirates was Prince Aligbe with 10 points and seven rebounds. Seton Hall was hurt by turnovers with 15 turnovers, while Fordham had 14 of their own. SHU shot only 43 percent in the first half and five lead changes in the clutch. The Pirates outrebounded Fordham 37-34.
In other local area sports, Gotham FC hosted their first ever playoff game at Red Bulls Stadium, and got a big win over the #6 seed Portland Thorns. The venue had 15,540 fans show up. Gotham will play in an upcoming semifinal round game on the road against the Washington Spirit this coming weekend
The New Jersey high school state playoffs are underway, and the Shabazz Bulldogs will travel to an undefeated 11-0 Bernards team. Shabazz came off a big road victory against a good Westwood High team 14-6.
Meanwhile, East Orange beat a tough Ridgewood team 14-3. They will play on the road at rival West Orange, who blanked Piscataway 31-0 at home. The sectional final is this Friday at 7 pm with East Orange at 8-2 on the season and West Orange holding at 9-2.
In the NFL, the Giants went over to Germany and lost to the Panthers 20-17 after RB Tyrone Tracy fumbled in overtime. As for the Jets, they went out to Arizona and got grounded 31-6. Both NY teams are in last place.
