For the second time since July, a man running for the President of the United States faced the threat of getting murdered.
On Sept. 15, former President Donald Trump was golfing at his Trump International Golf Club, when a Secret Service agent opened fire at some bushes. A man in the bushes fled and drove off in a vehicle. That vehicle was pulled over by local sheriff’s officers. After all was said and done, Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, was arrested. He was eventually hit with federal gun charges, in what was an attempt to assassinate Trump. The State of Florida also added charges of their own.
So far, authorities have suggested that Routh camped out at his position overnight, and laid in wait for 12 hours. Allegedly, he was armed with an AK-47, with a muzzle stick in the hole of a fence, and a GoPro, suggesting that he was going to film what he came there to do.
In the wake of the shooting, President Biden suggested that the Secret Service may need more personnel. After the previous assassination attempt, Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned in disgrace.
“I have been briefed by my team regarding what federal law enforcement is investigating as a possible assassination attempt of former President Trump,” Biden said in a statement. “A suspect is in custody, and I commend the work of the Secret Service and their law enforcement partners for their vigilance and their efforts to keep the former President and those around him safe. I am relieved that the former President is unharmed. There is an active investigation into this incident as law enforcement gathers more details about what happened.
“As I have said many times, there is no place for political violence or for any violence ever in our country, and I have directed my team to continue to ensure that Secret Service has every resource, capability and protective measure necessary to ensure the former President’s continued safety.”
“I am deeply disturbed by the possible assassination attempt of former President Trump today. As we gather the facts, I will be clear: I condemn political violence. We all must do our part to ensure that this incident does not lead to more violence,” said Vice President Harris in her own statement.
“I am thankful that former President Trump is safe. I commend the U.S. Secret Service and law enforcement partners for their vigilance. As President Biden said, our Administration will ensure the Secret Service has every resource, capability, and protective measure necessary to carry out its critical mission.”
While replying to the situation, X (fka Twitter) figurehead Elon Musk made a joke as to why no one attempted to assassinate President Biden or Presidential nominee Kamala Harris, which was quickly condemned, prompting his quick apology.
As expected, Trump gave a reaction, but most notably on X instead of Truth Social.
“I would like to thank everyone for your concern and well wishes – It was certainly an interesting day! Most importantly, I want to thank the U.S. Secret Service, Sheriff Ric Bradshaw and his Office of brave and dedicated Patriots, and, all of Law Enforcement, for the incredible job done today at Trump International in keeping me, as the 45th President of the United States, and the Republican Nominee in the upcoming Presidential Election, SAFE. THE JOB DONE WAS ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING. I AM VERY PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN,” he posted.
