This past weekend, players from Gotham FC returned from the Gold medal winning United States Women’s Soccer Olympic Team and hosted the Portland Thorns, who limped back to the PNW after a 2-0 loss in Harrison at Red Bulls Stadium.
FC got on the board in the first seven minutes on a goal by Ella Stevens. After some tough defense from both teams, Yazmeen Ryan booted one past the keeper in the 70 minute to make the score 2-0. Gotham extended its winning record to 10-4-3 on the season.
In the annual Snoopy Bowl, the New York Jets beat the New York Giants 10-3. No notable players took the field in the last preseason matchup in order to prevent injury.
Turning to New Jersey High School Football, the inaugural Mountaineer Football Classic will see Verona play Jefferson at West Orange High School. Then, Hillside will take on Snyder, while West Orange will play Orange High. On Saturday afternoon, Newark’s West Side will play Columbia, and that night it will be Plainfield squaring off against Newark’s East Side High School.
In other sports news, the team from Lake Mary, Florida won the Little League World Series in a 3-2 walkoff after Chinese Taipei had a throwing error on a bunt.
Finally, former wrestling champion Sid Eudy, known as “Sid Vicious,” “Sid Justice,” and “Sycho Sid,” has passed away. The “Master and Ruler of the World” was 63.
