Orange’s Recreation Department along with the Orange Public Schools hosted their annual Elementary League Basketball Championship games this past weekend at Orange High School.
The 4th and 5th grade division championship game saw the Heywood Avenue Wildcats lose to the tough Lincoln Avenue Panthers 19-18 in a game that went down to the wire. Heywood was down early, but went on a comeback, falling just short at the end. Lincoln Avenue has won back to back championships.
Between the two championship games it was a 3 on 3 basketball game. Meanwhile, Orange resident James Summers was honored with a lifetime achievement award for his dedication to the Orange community in the presence of his family members.
In the 6th and 7th grade title game, Oakwood Avenue School defeated Heywood Avenue 48-21. Panthers player Julian Faison who played on the Lincoln Avenue panthers team Faison said it feels very good on winning a championship by working together and believing in themselves as a whole team all coaches was giving appreciation awards for coaching there teams
In other sports, the New York Red Bulls are charging strong. This past Saturday, NY won a key game at home in Harrison over the New England Revolution 4-2. In the first half, Lewis Morgan kicked off the scoring for the Red Bulls, followed by Gil Charles who tied the game for the Revolution at 1-1. Then, Emil Forsberg put the Bulls on top 2-1, followed up by a score from teammate Elias Manoel to make it 3-1. Vironi Giacomo cut New England’s deficit to 3-2. Late in the second half, Cameron Harper gave NY some insurance to make it 4-2.
The New York Red Bulls are now 5-2-5, and has extended their home unbeaten streak to eight matches. Head coach Sandro Schwarz said on the victory, “We won against a good opponent. They have good quality and very good players.”
