This past weekend in Newark, hockey fans were treated to a game in the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL). Around 3,000 tri-state area fans from New York to Boston attended the game at the Prudential Center.

Before the game, Gotham FC Player and All American player Ali Krieger did the honorary puck drop, and the National Anthem was performed by Arlette, who sings at New Jersey Devils games and other major sporting events. Also attending the game was the Devils’ youth hockey program.

Both teams were scoreless at the end of the 1st period, but Nicole Kosta scored the first goal of the game for Boston, which was matched by New York’s Jessie Eldridge to leave the contest tied right before the end of the 2nd period at 1-1.

In the 3rd period, Kosta scored her 2nd goal of the game, which proved to be the game winner in a 2-1 Boston win. New York is currently in last place with a 3-10 record on the season, while Boston is in 5th place in the six team league.

NY head coach Howie Draper said after the game, “We can play better than we did today, but we had a lot of fan support. We feel good and women’s hockey is moving in the right direction.”

Another local event from this weekend was the 23rd Jordan Brand Basketball Classic at the Barclays Center. For the women’s high school players, Team Flight defeated Team Air 110-101. Leading Team Flight was South Carolina recruit Joyce Edwards with 25 points and Zamareya Jones with 15 points Team Air was led by UConn bound Morgan Cheli with 13 points.

In the men’s national game, Team Flight went over Team Air 119-113. Don Bosco Prep and all state player Dylan Harper put in 30 points and 8 rebounds along with MVP honors for the winning team.
