This past week there was plenty of excitement in local area sports. The Seton Hall men’s basketball team is on a roll at this moment, thanks to a big tournament resume victory over Marquette 78-75. Kadary Richmond and Al-Amir Dawes combined for 44 points and Dre Davis had a key basket to wrap up the victory this past Saturday at the Prudential Center. Davis who also had 11 points and seven rebounds.
Before this game, the Hall scored a win over Providence Friars on the road and a big victory against the defending National Champion Connecticut Huskies.
The Seton Hall women’s basketball team took a tough loss on December 30th against Providence 51-46. Prior to this, the Lady Pirates basketball team beat Georgetown on the road in 57-49. In the last home game against Villanova, the women pirates had a tough loss 50-47. Leading SHU was senior Azana Baines with 21 points and 7 rebounds in this game.
In other sports action, the New York Jets won their season finale at the New England Patriots 16-3, in what could be Bill Belichick final game coaching the Pats. In the afternoon, the New York Giants won their finale against the reeling Philadelphia Eagles at MetLife Stadium 27-10. Leading NYG was running back Saquon Barkley, who had two touchdowns in what could be his last game with the team, while QB Tyrod Taylor led the giants with 296 yards passing.
Finally, for the first time since sharing the honor in the 1997 season, the Michigan Wolverines are National Champions of the main college football world. The 15-0 squad finished an undefeated season by pulling away from the 14-1 Washington Huskies in the fourth quarter 34-13 in what could be coach Jim Harbaugh’s last game at the helm.
