Lyrics
Say my name, say my name
If no one is around you
Say baby I love you
If you ain’t runnin’ game
Say my name, say my name
You actin’ kinda shady
Ain’t callin’ me baby
Why the sudden change
Say my name, say my name – Song by Destiny’s Child
REPEAT MODE
Unlike the constant massacring of my name that has been done since I’ve been old enough to notice, only by a beloved few at introduction is my name normally enunciated precisely at the first attempt. Nobody can put respect on my name like my Latina Sista, but even more so than those Latino Bruthas can.
“Andrea” (Ann dra ya) as a name logically is dear to their hearts, and it triggers an immediate response, which is almost always coupled with a humongous smile as it is rolled off the tongue with such precision that sadly, my own mama’s call wane in comparison…Sorry mommy! Usually, that’s when I sternly give the directive over and over again, that they repeat it again and again. Which most seemingly are pleased to do so.
But, besides as lyrics or words of command, “Saying someone’s name” usually supports those trumped-up bedroom antics often seen in movies, on television, at somebody else’s crib, or perhaps even your own. But for me, whether adhering to that unexpected eavesdrop of somebody else or my gazing into the eyes of someone bold enough to say. For Andrea, if it aint spilling off the lips of “Papi” or “Mami, ” those words were meaningless.
Still, at last, I’ve realized that “Say My Name” is not only a bold statement in the form of a command. But more importantly, it is a decree used during one of man’s most valuable verbal exchanges. Sadly, I didn’t learn to put respect on that name until I was introduced to the thought by an unlikely two: My besties, Pastor and Mother Gheah. But it has become as valuable as formulating those decrees as praying over my water. Trust me. Speaking life into H20 before ingesting it had been taught by beloved African friend Mother Gray.
When I was adhering to my Besties praying for their beloved country, Africa, always in-which the States would soon follow. (RIP Mother Gheah) Yanking randomly from the fifty was a matter of choice. Sometimes, options would force my bowed head and clutched eyes to a halt as, gawking with my third eye at selection when it occasionally opened. As melodically as poetry (similarly to what Cindy Trimm does), names of the covenant relationships of family members and friends, associates, and even strangers would come trailing behind a hefty wish list that had been whispered, spoken, or shouted into the heavens when eloquently dodging the ethers.
These recipients of such a priceless and unique gift were often oblivious to that gift of offering; One of hope, faith, health, strength, and prosperity, as so the blanket of a secured future. The possibility was endless when granted to countries, organizations, and government heads. Nurses, doctors, laborers, truckers, teachers, cashiers, neighbors, passersby, and the beloved, of course as so even knowingly their enemies. Such gifts significantly impact our lives, knowingly and unknowingly. So it is of dire importance that we speak life, and we speak it without ceasing. That, too, is a command which is knowingly prayer. As driving say it! As passing buildings and housing of sorts, bless its inhabitants and speak! Save the children by saying it! Lift up our families, those marriages, relationships, and our hood…Say it! Blessings upon, blessing upon blessing… Speak!
Sprinkle and pour blessing upon all lives. Individually call them by name; when you know their name, enunciate it. If not, use a description. Say the name of our loved ones and our fellow man. (Remember, even Jesus asked evil, “What is your name.) Thus, saying that name means something.
We must commit to praying for our world and our communities or not at large, humanity in a nutshell, every step we take. Lastly, humbly, I ask that if you opt to take on the challenge while you’re at it, “Say My Name” (Ann dra ya), and don’t forget to roll your tongue like Papi and Mami do when you say it. Lol!
PARENTAL NOTE: Say your Children’s names over and over again: The Grandchildren! Eavesdrop on their convo and get a heads up on the necessary words that are to follow behind that name!
