JUNETEENTH

(Demographic: Orange New Jersey)

I had a blast on Monday at the “JUNETEENTH CELEBRATION OF FREEDOM” which had been sponsored by Mayor Dwayne D. Warren Esq. and Co-sponsored by Councilmember-At-Large Adrienne Wooten, and The Department of Community Service at Colgate Park.

Unfortunately, I arrived at the tail end of the Celebration because my duties as a school bus driver took precedence. But I assured my friend Tommy Edwards (A Need to Feed) who had extended the invite that I would show up with my journalist cap on, so I did.

I missed many activities, including the OHS Drumline performance, The Flag Raising, The Skatefest, The Proclamation Ceremony, the Fun Violence Balloon Release, and the Juneteenth Reenactment. I could still enjoy the beautiful vibes and souls that I had the pleasure of crossing paths with. Luckily, I got some pretty cool takeaways in the form of these pics, which is pretty cool because we all know that A PIC SPEAKS SO MUCH LOUDER… ENJOY!

More than half of states recognized Juneteenth as an official public holiday!

In most of these states, Juneteenth is designated as a permanent state holiday and commemorated annually. In Alabama and West Virginia, Juneteenth has been authorized as a state holiday for this year by a governor’s proclamation; the holiday can become permanent in these states if their legislatures pass bills to make it so.

Juneteenth is a combination of the words June and nineteenth. It commemorates the day more than two months after the end of the Civil War – and more than two years after Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation – when enslaved Black Americans in Galveston, Texas, were informed of their freedom.

Public awareness of Juneteenth grew in 2020 amid nationwide protests after the police killings of several Black Americans, including George Floyd and Breonna Taylor. President Joe Biden signed the legislation that made Juneteenth a federal holiday in June 2021.
