This past weekend in Orange, the Althea Gibson Foundation along with the City of Orange’s Recreation Department held their 4th Annual Tennis Jamboree at Central Playground in Orange.

Eight elementary schools took part in this event, which was part of Orange Week in the city. A total of 65 students in several different age groups throughout the Orange School District attended the tennis event featuring the Eastern United States Tennis Association, in which members help students work on their tennis skills.

Also taking part in this event was long time tennis instructor was Jean Gibson Szpara, a native of Guyana who has helped children in Orange for a long time since her youth. Joyce also competed as a tennis player herself at the age of 15. Joyce said she decided to give back to the youth in the community.

The kids that took part in the event were awarded trophies provided by the Orange Board of Education, and Orange Superintendent of Schools Dr. Gerald Fitzhugh also attended. The New Jersey Symphony provided music at the event.

In other sports news, the NBA Finals are underway, and as of this writing, the series is tied 1-1. Finally, in stunning golf news, the PGA Tour and LIV Tour have announced that they will be merging, and that all litigation will cease.
