This past weekend saw the New Jersey high school basketball group finals. First, Newark Tech played strong throughout, but lost a tough game to Woodbury 70-62, in a game that was marred by some questionable calls from the officials. Freshmen Tyshawn Boyd scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Marc Brown who had 4 steals for the 22-7 Tech team. The game was played at Jersey Mike’s Arena in Piscataway.
On the other side, Newark’s University High girls succeeded in winning another championship, taking down Shore 57-47. The game was far more competitive than any other this postseason for the Lady Phoenix, who rolled to their second straight North II Group I championship. Destiny Bynum-Johnson had UHS 9 points and 12 rebounds, Paradise Fisher added 13 points and 6 rebounds, and Morgan Marshall did the same. This game was played at the RWJ Barnabas Health Arena.
In the NFL, the NY Giants caved in and gave QB Daniel Jones a 4-year, $160 million to remain with the team, while placing the franchise tag on RB Saquon Barkley, which will cost them just over $10 million for one year. Meanwhile, the NY Jets failed in their quest to get QB Derek Carr, who landed with the New Orleans Saints on a 4-year, $140 million deal. As for former Jet and Giant QB Geno Smith, the 2022 comeback player of the year re-signed with the Seattle Seahawks for 3 years and $105 million.
