SPORTS WRAP

The regular season of the new jersey high school football season is near the end, and this past week was exciting to say the least. First, the Orange Tornadoes have won three straight games, with the latest being a 42-0 onslaught of Dickerson. Tornadoes making headlines were junior quarterback Maurice Williams, who went 13-23 for 226 yards and four touchdowns, while Jalen Phillips stormed the ground for 166 yards and 1 touchdown. Jabril Bridgeman put in work for the receiving corps with 3 catches for 108 yards. Orange is now 4-3 on the season, and if they can beat Lincoln of Jersey City at home on Friday night, a playoff run might be in the works.
On the other side of Essex County, Newark had a clash of the unbeaten teams. What looked like an instant classic in the making turned out to be anything but, with Weequahic cashing in on some key turnovers and bum-rushing West Side 42-0. Rashawn Marshall scored on a 57 yard touchdown run in the rout.
In other action, East Orange’s tough season continues after a 19-13 loss to Passaic Tech 19-13. Meanwhile, Barringer won a key game against Bloomfield 14-0, while the Irvington Blue Knights beat Livingston 52-7 improving to 6-2 on the season and heading on to the playoffs to defend their crown.
In pro football, the Giants scored an upset win at home over the Baltimore Ravens 24-20, while the Jets went to Green Bay and completely owned the Packers 27-10.
Finally, in MLB, the Yankees staved off elimination and beat the Cleveland Guardians in their ALDS series. They are now set to take on the hated Houston Astros in the ALCS, while the Philadelphia Phillies, who stunned the former defending champion Atlanta Braves, will take on the San Diego Padres, who upset the 111 win Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLCS.
