The annual Monte Irvin Woodbat Classic Baseball Tournament recently took place at Central Playground in Orange. Among the teams in Group A were the Monte Irvin Giants, Queens / Nassau Comets, Camden Braves, and the Philly Black Sox. In the championship game, it was the Giants losing to the Queens / Nassau Comets 16-4. The Comets beat Camden 9-1 and while the Giants beat Philly 10-0 in semifinal competition prior to the final clash. This is the third straight year that Queens/ Nassau has won this tournament.

Back in 2014, the tournament started at the new Central Playground and was named in honor of the great Monte Irvin, an outfielder who played for the Newark Eagles in the Negro National League in 1938. The annual tourney has been organized by Wally Boyett, who has shown his dedication to this annual event.

In the world of tennis, fans were stunned to hear that Serena Williams has decided to transition away from the sport. Basically, she is retiring, but did not want to use that word. Her final chance to tie Margaret Court’s all-time women’s major record of 24 will be at this year’s U.S. Open.
