This week in sports, the New York Yankees are coming off a split with their rival Houston Astros and another with the Cleveland Guardians (formerly the Indians). Despite that, then Yanks have the best record in baseball with a mark of 58-22. As for the other local team, the New York Mets have a 49-33 record which has team at the top of the NL East standings.

At the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest, champion Joey Chestnut won his 15th Mustard Belt, downing 63 hot dogs and buns despite a leg injury and a protester he promptly put in a headlock during the contest. On the women’s side, Miki Sudo added another Mustard Belt to her collection with 40 hot dogs and buns. She did not compete last year due to pregnancy.

In the NBA, RJ Cole has found a spot on the Los Angeles Lakers. The former University of Connecticut all star player has now joined the team to play in the summer league.

Speaking of the NBA, the basketball world is still reeling over Kevin Durant’s request to be traded from the Nets. This comes as the team is also working on a deal to get Kyrie Irving out of town, after he opted into the final year of his contract.

Finally, the San Jose Sharks have hired Mike Grier as their General Manager. Grier has now become the first Black GM in NHL history.
