The annual Martin Luther King, Jr. basketball tournament took place in Orange this past Monday, but due to COVID-19 rules there was no fans in attendance. Despite that, the games were shown on the Orange Athletics YouTube page. In a battle of Newark squads, Payne Tech defeated Science Park 52-50 thanks to 14 points and 4 rebounds from Kyle Schiner.

In a battle of the Oranges, the East Orange Campus Jaguars defeated West Orange 67-53.  Nahum Lewis netted a double-double for the Jags with 26 points and 12 rebounds. East Orange is now 5-1 on the season, and looking to keep the momentum going after the school’s football team took home a championship.

In the third game of the day, the East Orange girls’ basketball team dominated the Orange girls squad 83-11. Finally, in the nightcap, Newark Tech slipped by the Orange boys’ team 48-47. The Tornadoes got 12 points and 14 rebounds from Paul Metellus, while Khalil Sanders led Newark Tech to the win with 18 points.

The playoffs are underway in the NFL, and with the exception of San Francisco stunning Dallas, Wild Card Weekend saw wins from all the home teams. Next week, the 49ers will play at Green Bay, Tampa Bay will host the Los Angeles Rams, Cincinnati will travel to Tennessee, and Buffalo heads to Kansas City.
