Local football season is underway, and this past weekend featured some great action. First, the East Orange Campus Jaguars battled the Montclair Mounties. These two teams have been rivals for a long time. East Orange was led by Raenden Oliver who was 18-27 passing for 233 yards and touchdown passes to BJ Covington. Damon Phillips ran the ball 31 times for 227 yards and scored two touchdowns for the Jags. All of this helped deliver a 37-28 victory over Montclair.

The teams were supposed to play the game at SHI Stadium in New Brunswick as part of the Rumble on the Raritan. However, the game was moved to East Orange at Roberson Stadium due to the effects of Tropical Storm Ida.

Another game moved from SHI Stadium was Seton Hall Prep’s game against Union City, which was played in Union City. The Prep Pirates handled Union City 48-6 in a blowout. Seton Hall Prep is now 2-0 on the season. Senior Myles Thomason led the team with 240 yards and 3 TDs on 14 carries.

In other area games, West Side lost to Passaic County Tech 21-12 in the Zone Six Football Classic. West Orange got crushed by Top 20 powerhouse St. Peter’s 49-8, while the Orange Tornadoes lost to Chatham 43-7. Meanwhile, the Central High Blue Devils lost to Lincoln High 36-6.

Finally, Yankees legend Derek Jeter was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame along with Rockies star Larry Walker and three others. This ceremony was actually for 2020 inductees, as their ceremony was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
