With the local school sports off for the summer, attention now turns to the pros. In MLB, the Subway Series once again took center stage in the Big Apple. The first round came at Yankee Stadium, with the New York Mets winning the first game 8-3 on July 3.
Then came a doubleheader the next day, with the squad from Queens winning 10-5. The Amazins sparked a rally with a Pete Alonso game tying home run, part of six straight runs in the seventh inning. In the night game, the Yankees avoided a sweep thanks to a 4-2 win. Because of the new doubleheader rules, both games were only played seven innings. The Mets currently sit atop the NL East standings, while the Bronx Bombers are 10.5 games out of first place in the AL East.
This week, the NBA Finals began, with the Milwaukee Bucks playing the Phoenix Suns in a best of seven series. The Suns have made the Finals for the first time since 1993, thanks to guards Chris Paul and Devin Booker. Phoenix won the Western Conference Finals in six games over the Los Angeles Clippers. Meanwhile, despite missing former MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Bucks won the Eastern Conference in six games over the Atlanta Hawks.
