Summer is upon us, and the summer league basketball leagues throughout Essex County at Montclair Immaculate started a couple of weeks ago in which local area teams participated. In the first game that was held on June 7th, it was Newark Central winning 58-35 against Newark East Side. In alter game, East Side bounced back and beat Ramsay 57-21.
In other local area sports events, the City of East Orange will host the Harry James Youth Basketball Summer Basketball League from July 6th thru August 5th at the Elmwood basketball courts. There will be one boys 9-11 years old division, and another for those 12-14.
Also, the Essex County parks department hosted their annual fishing derby at Monty Irvin Park, and Orange youth and resident Makenna Moore caught the most fish. East Orange’s Rashad Adams caught the most fish in his age group from the 1-5 category.
In other sports news, Newark native and Seattle Mariners pitcher Hector Santiago became the first player suspended under Major League Baseball’s crackdown on pitchers doctoring baseballs. Santiago, who played for Bloomfield Tech while in high school, will be out of action for 10 games on his first offense. Also, Serena Williams had to withdraw from her first Wimbledon match due to an injury.
