This week is almost all about basketball. Locally, the East Side boys’ basketball team defeated Orange 64-59, while Montclair Immaculate beat Prestige Prep 71-56, and DePaul beat West Orange 73-55. In Newark, University got by Central 75-71 in a great game, while East Orange defeated West Side 57-40.
In girls’ basketball action, Montclair handled Weequahic 60-35, Central squeezed Orange 53-28, Caldwell beat Newark Tech 55-42, and Hudson Catholic got a 53-37 win over East Orange.
Turning to college basketball, the Seton Hall men’s basketball crew is 13-10 and on the NCAA Tournament bubble after a tough loss 61-52 at Butler. The Pirates will go on the road to St. John’s, with a 10-7 record in the Big East Conference.
Meanwhile, the women’s basketball team had a recent game with the Red Storm, and won 59-43 on the road. The SHU ladies are now 14-6 this year. Senior Desiree Elmore scored a game high 30 points in a recent game for the Lady Pirates, who will be the #3 seed in the upcoming Big East Tournament in Connecticut
In NBA news, the New York Knicks are actually doing well this season in the Eastern Conference, sitting as high as fourth place. This is far better than the Atlanta Hawks, who fired dead coach Lloyd Pierce.
Finally, New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone has taken a leave of absence in order to have a pacemaker installed. Also, NFL defensive end J.J. Watt has signed a two-year deal with the Arizona Cardinals.
