NEWARK – Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose is reporting the arrests of Rosa E. Mainato, 23, and Fanny Camas, 27, both of Irvington, for maintaining an unlicensed liquor establishment at separate large parties held at the same location this weekend.

“It’s incredible how once again people put wealth over health,” Director Ambrose said. “It’s selfish people like this who perpetuate the spread.”

On Jan. 9, at approximately 11:45 p.m., police responded to 223 Verona Avenue, on a report of a COVID-19 violation. Responding police observed several people at the location, not wearing masks and drinking beers. Officers also observed a full soccer game, with separately uniformed players and spectators, occurring.

Police arrested Rosa Mainato who was serving beer from a concession stand in exchange for money without a license. They confiscated 720 Bud Light Lime beers and 272 Corona beers. Mainato faces charges of maintaining an unlicensed liquor establishment, illegal sale of liquor, and unlawful possession of alcohol.

In a separate incident, police responded to a complaint of a COVID-19 violation at the same Verona Avenue address at 7:40 p.m. Sunday. Responding officers observed 150 to 200 adults and children, many not social distancing nor wearing masks, inside the establishment. Fanny Camas was arrested for serving beers from a concession stand for money without a license. Police confiscated 22 beers and $830.00 in proceeds from illegal alcohol sales.

Camas is charged with maintaining an unlicensed liquor establishment, illegal sale of liquor, and unlawful possession of alcohol. Both investigations are continuing with additional charges possible. These charges are merely accusations. Each suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
