NEWARK – Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose reports that members of the Newark Fire Division extinguished a vehicle fire at Bergen Street and Madison Avenue that resulted in a fatality July 28.

Just before 11:50 a.m., firefighters responded to the vehicle fire resulting from a collision of two passenger vehicles and a small tanker truck. One of the passenger vehicles and the tanker were both on fire as a result of this incident. The fire was considered under control at 12:11 p.m.

Mayor Ras Baraka and Director Ambrose were both at the scene. “Our deepest condolences are extended to the decedent’s family and to the other victims involved,” Director Ambrose said. “Some 40 Newark Firefighters responded and worked tirelessly to contain the fire. It’s a sad day when something like this happens.”

On July 29, the deceased was identified as Durhon Fuller, 34, of Newark.

This incident under investigation by the Newark Fire Division’s Arson Unit, Newark Police Division and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.
