UNITED STATES

Another mass shooting has shaken America – this time on one of the most prestigious streets in one of the most prestigious cities.

On July 28, a man eventually identified as 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura came to 345 Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, New York City, and opened fire. His purpose via a note found on her person suggested that he was looking for the National Football League (NFL) offices inside the building, alleging that the league gave him chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE.

In his rampage, Tamura took five lives, including his own, and 36-year-old New York City police officer Didarul Islam. Four others suffered injuries, but are expected to recover.

Tamura, who has a documented history of mental illness, was intent on wreaking havoc at the NFL offices. However, he took the wrong elevator and ended up at the offices of Rudin instead.

“This never, never gets easy. I’ll always go back to the beginning of my role as a mayor in Harlem Hospital where Officer Mora and Rivera were assassinated. I remember watching their family members enter the hospital, their loud yell, no, God, please tell me it’s not true. I thought about that today when the notification came over from the police commissioner that we had a number of shots fired and we’re still unraveling what took place,” Mayor Eric Adams said at a press conference updating everyone about the incident.

“Our hearts are heavy, five innocent people shot tonight, we lost four souls to another senseless act of gun violence, including a member of the New York City Police Department, Officer Islam. He served in the 47th precinct, he was just 36 years old and a three and a half year veteran of the department. He was doing what he does best and all members of the police department carry out. He was saving lives, he was protecting New Yorkers.

“He’s an immigrant from Bangladesh and he loved this city and everyone we spoke with stated he was a person of faith and a person that believed in God and believed in living out the life of a godly person. He embodies what this city is all about. He’s a true blue New Yorker, not only in a uniform he wore, but in his spirit and energy of loving this city.

“Early tonight I met with the officer’s family, I told them that he was a hero and we admire him for putting his life on the line. This was his dad only son. I think about Jordan, my child, and it’s unimaginable to experience a loss of this magnitude. And three of the innocent civilians are also dead. Two males and one female and another male is seriously injured fighting for his life in critical condition because of the violent, despicable attack.

“Additionally, the shooter is dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. To be clear, six total tonight, one including the perpetrator. And I’m sorry, six total was shot tonight, one including the perpetrator. No words can describe this act of evil, a man who takes the life of others who are innocent. No words can fill the void that has been left by this tragedy.

“Our hearts break for the families and friends of the victims. We pray for the swift and safe recovery of the injured. Horrific crime reminds us all how easy it is to gain access to a gun. Gun violence has scarred so many neighbors and ripped apart too many families across this entire country. And we will continue the fight to do all we can to protect our city.

“But tonight we mourn for those who were killed. And we pray for the families as they go through this painful moment. And as I stated, five innocent people were shot. And the perpetrator was shot. We will continue to do what we do as a city. And let’s fight to protect innocent New Yorkers.”

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell instructed personnel who worked at 345 Park Ave. to either stay home or work remotely in the aftermath of the shooting.

FAMINE CRISIS PREVAILS DESPITE NEWLY ALLOWED AID

“The worst-case scenario of famine is currently playing out in Gaza,” UN-backed food security experts said on July 29, in a call to action amid unrelenting conflict, mass displacement and the near-total collapse of essential services in the war-battered enclave.

According to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) platform, two out of three famine thresholds have been reached in Gaza: plummeting food consumption and acute malnutrition. Famine has not been declared as the third criteria, deaths from malnutrition, cannot be demonstrated.

There is mounting evidence that “widespread starvation, malnutrition and disease” are driving a rise in hunger-related deaths, which is the third famine indicator.

“It’s clearly a disaster unfolding in front of our eyes, in front of our television screens,” said Ross Smith, UN World Food Program (WFP) director of emergencies.

“This is not a warning, this is a call to action. This is unlike anything we have seen in this century,” he told journalists in Geneva.

In New York, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said the alert “confirms what we have feared,” namely that Gaza is on the brink of famine.

“The facts are in, and they are undeniable,” he stated.

“Palestinians in Gaza are enduring a humanitarian catastrophe of epic proportions. This is not a warning. It is a reality unfolding before our eyes.”

The context to the alert is stark: one in three people is now going without food for days at a time, the IPC said. Hospitals are also overwhelmed and have treated more than 20,000 children for acute malnutrition since April. At least 16 children under five have died from hunger-related causes since mid-July.

The alert follows a May 2025 IPC analysis that projected catastrophic levels of food insecurity for the entire population by September. According to the platform’s experts, at least half a million people are expected to be in IPC Phase 5 catastrophe – which is marked by starvation, destitution and death.

The crisis is driven by nearly two years of conflict sparked by Hamas-led terror attacks in Israel in October 2023 that left some 1,250 dead and around 450 people taken hostage.

Heavy fighting has killed thousands and destroyed 70 per cent of Gaza’s infrastructure. Echoing aid agencies’ longstanding concerns for non-combatants, the IPC assessment confirmed that displacement is rampant, with safe areas reduced to less than 12 per cent of the entire territory.

Gaza has a population of some 2.1 million people and 90 percent have been displaced, many of them multiple times over. More than 762,500 displacements have been recorded since the end of the ceasefire on March 18.

Meanwhile, humanitarian access remains severely restricted, with aid convoys frequently obstructed or looted. On July 27, Israel announced that it would begin daily humanitarian pauses in Gaza. More than 100 trucks of aid reportedly entered, but the UN continues to uphold the need to flood Gaza with food, fuel and medicine.

The Secretary-General’s statement stressed that “the trickle of aid must become an ocean.”

“This nightmare must end,” Mr. Guterres said.  “Ending this worst-case scenario will take the best efforts of all parties now.”

The UN chief repeated his appeal for an immediate and permanent humanitarian ceasefire, the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages held in Gaza and full humanitarian access across the enclave.

“This is a test of our shared humanity, a test we cannot afford to fail,” he said.

UK TO RECOGNIZE PALESTINE AS A STATE?

In light of the recent events in Gaza, UK Prime Minister made a statement that could inspire other high ranking officials to follow suit.

“Our overwhelming concern is for the hostages and for the people of Gaza. We must do all we can to end the current suffering and change the situation on the ground.

“We demand an immediate ceasefire to stop the slaughter, that the UN be allowed to send humanitarian assistance into Gaza on a continuing basis to prevent starvation, and the immediate release of the hostages. We support the US, Qatari and Egyptian governments in their attempts to bring about a ceasefire.

“We also need a comprehensive plan to end this misery and to get to a long-term settlement. We are committed to working together with our international partners to develop a credible peace plan for the next phase in Gaza that establishes transitional governance and security arrangements, and ensures the delivery of humanitarian aid at the necessary scale. This must be accompanied by the withdrawal of Israeli forces and the removal of Hamas leadership from Gaza as key steps towards a negotiated two-state solution. We welcome the steps announced by President Abbas and these should be the basis for a comprehensive reform of the PA.

“We have long been committed to recognizing a state of Palestine. As our election manifesto said, Palestinian statehood is the inalienable right of the Palestinian people. It is not in the gift of any neighbor and is also essential to the long-term security of Israel. We are committed to recognizing a Palestinian state as a contribution to a renewed peace process which results in a two-state solution with a safe and secure Israel alongside a viable and sovereign Palestinian state.

“Hamas are a terrorist organization responsible for the October 7th atrocities. They must never be rewarded. We have been unequivocal in our condemnation of those evil attacks, and our support for the right of the State of Israel to self-defense. Hamas must immediately release all the hostages, sign up to an immediate ceasefire, accept that they will play no part in the government of Gaza, and commit to disarmament.

“We are determined to protect the viability of the two-state solution, and so we will recognize the state of Palestine in September before UNGA; unless the Israeli government takes substantive steps to end the appalling situation in Gaza and commits to a long term sustainable peace, including through allowing the UN to restart without delay the supply of humanitarian support to the people of Gaza to end starvation, agreeing to a ceasefire, and making clear there will be no annexations in the West Bank.

“We will make an assessment ahead of UNGA on how far the parties have met these steps. No one side will have a veto on recognition through their actions or inactions.

“But recognition by itself will not change the situation on the ground.

“We are therefore taking additional immediate steps to alleviate the humanitarian situation, including air drops of humanitarian supplies along with Jordan, and getting injured children out of Gaza and into British hospitals alongside pressing strongly for UN deliveries of humanitarian assistance to resume.

“We also believe that a ceasefire will not last without urgent work on governance and security in Gaza, and the prospect of a long-term political settlement. We are therefore preparing a plan with our key allies for longer-term political negotiations and a two-state solution.”

TRAFFICKING NETWORK SHUT DOWN

An organized crime group that took vulnerable women from Romania to the Netherlands for sexual exploitation has been halted thanks to a coordinated operation between Romanian and Dutch authorities, in collaboration with Eurojust. During an action day earlier this month, 13 suspects were arrested in both countries. Four of the suspects have been surrendered from Romania to the Netherlands.

Starting in 2020, the group, led by two family members, used ‘loverboy’ techniques to target vulnerable Romanian women, who were coerced into prostitution in the Netherlands under direct supervision of the criminal group.

To maintain total control over the lives of their victims, the suspects lived with them. In some cases, members of the group used physical and psychological force against the women to prevent them from escaping the situation.

The sexual exploitation generated significant illegal proceeds for the criminal group, which were laundered through relatives and close friends. These individuals either transported large sums of cash or moved the money through financial institutions.

Eurojust coordinated the international investigation. After the Romanian authorities approached Eurojust for support in early 2024, several meetings were organized with the Dutch authorities. During these meetings, information about the criminal group was exchanged. To enable the authorities to work together effectively and exchange information and evidence in real time, Eurojust set up a joint investigation team in January 2025.

Together with Eurojust, the authorities organized an action day early this month to detain the suspects and gather more evidence through house searches. In the Netherlands, six suspects were arrested and four houses were searched. During actions in Romania, four suspects were arrested based on European Arrest Warrants from the Netherlands and three suspects were put under judicial control. Additionally, 18 houses were searched and a car, weapons and cash were seized.

Eight of the arrested suspects remain in pre-trial detention.
