The Monte Irvin Baseball League had its opening day on Saturday May 21st in Orange. To celebrate, the event started with a parade to Metcalf Park, featuring the teams in the league, parents of the players, the Orange High School Tornadoes Marching Band and even the Orange Fire Department, along with the councilwoman of the South Ward and the city’s mayor.

Also attending the opening day ceremonies was Wally Boyett who is the head coach of the Orange High School baseball team and the former commissioner of the Monte Irvin League, which started back in 2006. Current Commissioner Corey Cooper was a former player.

This marks the 70th year that baseball has been played in Orange. There are 75 kids that participate in the league, with ages ranging 5-7, 8-9, and 10-12. Overall, there are a total of six teams that take part in the Monte Irvin Baseball League.
