The Olympic games this year in Tokyo have come to an end, but there was some representation from Essex County. Newark native Ezinne Kalu traveled to Tokyo as part of the Nigerian women’s basketball team. She played at Science Park High School, and even became the first player in girls’ basketball program history to have a jersey retired, before heading to Savannah State University. While Kalu and Nigeria fell short to Tram USA in Group B, the out up a good fight, only losing 81-72.

This coming week, the National Football League will fully open up its preseason schedule. The annual “MetLife Bowl” will pit the New York Giants against the New York Jets on Aug. 14.

As for New Jersey’s high school football teams, summer workouts have begun for local area Essex County teams like the Orange Tornadoes, East Orange Campus Jaguars, Bloomfield Bengals, Irvington Blue Knights and more. It will be exciting to see which area teams improve from last season. This time, conditions willing, there will be fans there to attend the games.
