By the time you read this, the New York Knicks playoff run might be done, as the team has had their hands full with Trae Young and the Atlanta Hawks. Meanwhile the Nets not only finished off the Boston Celtics four games to one, but apparently, they ended Danny Ainge’s run in the Celtics front office. Head coach Brad Stevens is expected to get Ainge’s job and hire a new coach.
This year’s Indianapolis 500 had fans and an old favorite in victory lane. Forty-five year old Helio Castroneves won his fourth 500 in front of 135.000 fans, the highest attended event since the pandemic. Also, Kyle Larson won the Coca-Cola 600, NASCAR’s longest race.
In other sports news, the NJIT Highlanders baseball team has advanced to the NCAA baseball tournament. The Highlanders have won 9 straight games and boast an overall record of 26-22 on the season, while going 23-17 in conference play. They’ll be on the road this weekend and will play top seeded Arkansas in Fayetteville.
In the Essex County area, the Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center honored student athletes last weekend from Super Essex Conference schools. Among those with sports and education honorees were Arts, Barringer, Bloomfield, East Orange Campus, Irvington, and Orange high schools.
Finally, in huge breaking news, legendary Duke men’s basketball head coach Mike Krzyzewski announced he will retire after this season at the helm of the Blue Devils program.
