Outgoing Governor Phil Murphy talked a lot but did not achieve as expected. He seems good at playing good politics, but when it comes to the people, he has not done much in my opinion.

Sherrill on the very first day appointed her long time inner circle player Kellie Doucette as Chief Operating Officer, a newly created position. All departments have to report to the COO. Meanwhile, she announced a good thing for the people. She will declare a state of emergency on exorbitant utilities cost and will freeze utility rates from going up. This is good news for the people in New Jersey. She said in her campaign that she will reduce energy costs for the people of New Jersey. Congratulations to Mikie Sherrill. Local Talk has always supported her as a viable candidate. The only question is why didn’t Phil Murphy do this?

This year, the federal holiday for the commemoration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day was January 19, 2026. Dr. King was born on January 15, 1929, and his assassination date was April 4, 1968. His assassination took place in a hotel in Memphis, Tennessee. The alleged assassin, James Earl Ray was convicted as he pleaded guilty. He was sentenced to 99 years. He tried to reverse his plea deal, but was unsuccessful many times before his death in 1998. We lost a great leader and great orator in Dr. King. We all miss him even to this day and he will be remembered for centuries to come.

The Minneapolis fatal shooting of Renee Good by an ICE Officer that happened on January 7th will be remembered by many. President Trump and ICE said that the officer shot Good in self-defense. However, two groups stated opposing information. Tensions continued over the weekend in Minneapolis. Mayor Frey and Governor Walz are supporting the people and are asking ICE to get out of Minnesota. However, ICE has a right by law to stop and ask for identification. When ICE stops you, you must stop and you have the right to state that you are a US citizen. If you have government identification, you can show it to them. Otherwise, you have the right to make one phone call.

Also, you have the right to ask for the supervisor, who might understand more and may let you go as long as you are a US citizen. You also can make a phone call to your local US representative (congressperson). Very important: you don’t need to sign any paperwork prepared by the ICE officer and do not have to argue or debate with the officer. Many people who are US citizens have been sent to jail as they signed the form stating that they accept the rules.

Have a wonderful week.
