ORANGE<\/strong> – Of all the accomplishments that the late Richard J. “Dick” Codey achieved or positions he was elected to or otherwise attained in his 79 years, one of “Local Talk’s” first thoughts when his death was announced by his family in Roseland Jan. 11 was: “He sure knew how to read people.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Codey – Orange native, West Orange resident, 50-year state legislator, thrice governor, businessman, youth basketball coach, family man and part-time comedian – honed his interpersonal skills over the decades. He knew who he had to be serious with and who wou8ld appreciate his humor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sen. Codey and “Local Talk” were the first to arrive at Our Lady of the Valley Church Feb. 1, 2018 on the occasion of Bernice Codey Hartwyck’s Funeral Mass. Codey was there that Saturday morning both as Codey & Jones Funeral Director and as a mourning relative. \u201cLT\u201d was there in part to gather information to write her obituary. (B.C. Codey Hartwyck was the last of the original Codey generation who founded the family funeral home on High Street.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLT\u201d shook his hand and said, “I’m here to pay tribute.” Codey cracked a wry smile and asked, “Where’s the envelope?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLT,\u201d smiling back, turned serious and thanked him and his staff for helping the Elliotts arrange grandmother and former Maplewood resident Sybil M. Elliott’s Jan. 6, 1984 last rites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then-Senate President Codey was first called up as Acting Governor, between the outgoing Donald J. DiFrancesco – who replaced Christine Todd Whitman – and the incoming James McGreevey, for 3.5 days. He noted that his first tenure “was not marked by scandal or tax increases.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Richard J. Codey was born Nov. 27, 1946 and first went to St. John’s elementary school in Orange’s North Ward near his home and funeral parlor. He was first promoted to Our Lady of the Valley High School and was then transferred to Orange High School and finally graduated from Summit’s Oratory Prep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I attended three high schools all starting with the letter “O,” wrote Codey in his 2011 memoir, “Me, Governor?” “My father wanted me to be true to my Irish heritage by attending Caldwell College and Seton Hall – all Catholic institutions.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Richard’s father also gave his son, a third generation member, an early start in the funeral business. “I went to train wrecks, taking bodies out, at 14. You grew up fast.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Codey eventually earned his funeral director’s license and took over the business after his father was named Essex County Coroner. He also owned an insurance company through 2004. He was known to resign from either job when his public service presented a conflict of interest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Codey and the late Eldridge Hawkins, Sr. were first elected to the General Assembly – representing Orange, East Orange and West Orange – in 1974. He was elected to the State Senate in 1981, helping to set a record 50 years in the State Legislature through 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Codey was named Senate President 2002-10. He became (Acting) Governor on McGreevey’s Nov. 15, 2004 resignation though Jan. 17, 2006. (Codey was also Acting Governor for a few weeks while Jon Corzine was recuperating from a car accident.) He became the last Senate President to be appointed interim or acting governor when the State Legislature later created the office of Lt. Governor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Codey picked up the cause of better mental health after his wife, Mary Jo, suffered from postpartum depression.  He was known to go undercover – posing as a Marlboro State Hospital Orderly or a “homeless man” taking in a shelter – to seek improvements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The last time \u201cLT\u201d caught up with Codey was outside the Old Essex County Courthouse Aug. 11, 2023 at the corner of West Market Street and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard. I was standing at the corner when Codey rolled down his car window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both of us were there for Lt. Gov. Sheila Y. Oliver’s viewing. We commiserated each other on the quality of the loss of a “Local Talk” favorite daughter plus some small talk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Little did \u201cLT\u201d know that Codey was contemplating his retirement, which he announced on Aug. 15. His announcement caused State Democratic Committee Chairman LeRoy Jones, Jr. of East Orange to shift West Orange Assemblyman John McKeon to run in Codey’s place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In retirement, from Jan. 9, 2024, Codey returned to his now-Caldwell funeral home, coached more youth basketball teams, spent more family time and in talking with constituents at a New Jersey diner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“One of my best memories of being a governor is when you went to the movies, or a restaurant or a diner, people stood up and applauded,” Codey recently told a reporter. “That’s pretty cool.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wife Mary Jo and sons Kevin and Chris are among his survivors. Funeral arrangements remained pending as of press time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGovernor Richard J. Codey was a legend,\u201d said McKeon (D-Essex\/Passaic) on Codey\u2019s passing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cJust yesterday, I was meeting with a constituent who shared a touching story about how Governor Codey mentored his son and the profound impact he had on his life. It spoke volumes about the kind of man Governor Codey was. This was just one of the thousands of lives which he touched.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHis integrity, compassion and unwavering commitment to public service left a lasting mark on our state and on everyone he served, especially myself. I first met Governor Codey when I was in middle school. From that moment, he took me under his wing, and I later had the privilege of working alongside him in his early days as an Assemblyman. Observing firsthand his empathy, humility and advocacy for those who could not speak for themselves have had a profound and enduring influence on my professional life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI had the honor of serving alongside him in the Legislature for nearly 30 years, a partnership and friendship I will always cherish. He was a remarkable man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy thoughts and prayers are with Mary Jo, Kevin, Chris and his grandchildren for whom he had a deep love. Governor Codey\u2019s legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched and the enduring example of leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
