You are witnessing the peaceful change of political power.”

Some, in light of the fifth anniversary of the fatal storming of the U.S. Capitol, may not be taking this change for granted.

Herewith is a summary of that political power change or passing of the educational leadership torch among our “Local Talk” area towns:

In East Orange, Noon, Jan. 1 saw familiar faces re-sworn to their mayor and council seats.

Mayor Theodore “Ted” Green was sworn into his new four year mayoral term. His re-elected Team Green running mates were also returned: Christopher James in the First Ward, Christopher Awe in the Second Ward, Bergson Leneus in the Third Ward, Tameika Garrett-Ward in the Fourth Ward and Alician Holman in the Fifth Ward.

Both West Orange’s Township Council, where former Councilwoman Tammy Williams is to be reinaugurated, and Board of Education, which is to swear-in newly elected Robert Ivker and Dr. Dia N. Mundell’s council successor Rosalee Gonzalez and three councilwomen-at-large – Monica Charris-Tabares, former school board president Jill Fischman and Tracy Toler-Phillips were later sworn in.

Bloomfield’s Board of Education reorganization – where Deanna Wilson, Andrew Lamonte and Kerri Joyce are to be sworn in – was set for Jan. 6.

The Montclair Public School’s Jan. 5 reorganization meeting saw returning member Yvonne Bouknight and newcomers Sean Long and Kerri McMahon were sworn in before the newly reconstituted panel called an executive session to consider the new school budget deficit tax questions. (See related story.)

Several public speakers and online writers, however, questioned the propriety of the Jan. 5 meeting under the state’s Open Public Meetings Act. The critics claim that the Essex County Superintendent of Schools nor the Essex County Board of Elections had not yet approved of the march 10 budget tax special election. That approval, they said, must be done before the 60-day advance on the election – leaving Montclair’s educators until Jan 10 to seek county approval.

Glen Ridge’s Borough Council and Board of Education reorganizations were held simultaneously but three blocks apart Jan. 5. Council Chamber attendees saw incumbent Richard Law and the newly elected Anthony Turiano sworn into their new four-year terms.

Incumbent board members Tricia Akinwande and Elisabeth Ginsburg and newcomer Luke Franklin were sworn in at the Glen Ridge High School Auditorium.

The Belleville Public Schools’ Board of Education welcomed first termers Cristine Garro plus newcomers Kenia Santana and Yadira Munoz Jan. 5 at the high school auditorium. Incumbents Esteban Leon and Lissa Missaggia were respectively named Board President and Vice President.

The Nutley Public Schools welcomed former member Theresa “Terry” Quirk, incumbent Tom D’Elia and newcomer Steffan R.
