The Prudential Center hosted “A Racquet at The Rock” and had over 10,000-plus eager fans on hand.

The exhibition featured two American women in the Top Ten, Jessica Pegula and Amanda Anisimova. Also taking to the court was men’s #1 player and six-time Grand Slam champion, Carlos Alcaraz, along with 2nd-ranked American and US Open Semifinalist, Frances Tiafoe.

New Jersey native Anisimova, who hails from Freehold, made two Grand Slam finals this year. Her confidence was high coming into the match. She made a meteoric rise in 2025, first rising to the top 20, then the top 10, and now a career-high top 4.

Pegula got off to a quick 2-0 lead in the first set. Anisimova managed to get several break points in the third game, and eventually broke Pegula to get her first game 1-2, and to get back on serve. Anisimova pulled even at 2-2, next service game, and would break Pegula’s serve next game to take a 3-2 lead, and then hold serve for a 4-2 lead by running down all Pegula’s offensive shots and keeping her balls very deep in the court, when she wasn’t hitting service return winners off of Pegula’s ineffective serve. The first set would eventually go Anisimova’s way, winning 6-3, but her level was beginning to drop, and Pegula was starting to pick up steam.

Anisimova took a 2-0 lead to open the 2nd set, but the unforced errors were beginning to pile up, a change from the flawless play of the first set. Pegula was fired up after chasing down a drop shot and turning it into a winner, and then broke Anisimova’s serve to get the set back on serve, 1-2.

Pegula held serve easily to pull even, 2-2. Succumbing to her 6th double fault, Anisimova would surrender the 5th game of the 2nd set. Pegula would now lead 3-2 with a break of serve. Anisimova would break at love to tie the score at 3-3. Following the game with a hold at love for a 4-3 for Anisimova. Pegula holds serve to make it 4-4. Anisimova easily held to make it 5-4 games. Pegula would hold serve to even everything up at 5-5, followed by a break of the Anisimova serve, for a 6-5 Pegula lead, but she would lose her serve and there would be a tiebreaker to decide the 2nd set. Pegula would go up 4-2, with the mini break. But Anisimova’s precise backhand winner would get it back on serve at 4-3. Pegula would hold onto the lead and eventually win the breaker at 7-4. Sets are 1-1. So, a 10-point match tiebreak would have to decide the winner.

Anisimova’s unforced errors crept upward, and Pegula took the victory, 3-6, 7-6, 10-8.

Anisimova was up a set and a break, within a few points of a double-break lead in the 2nd set. But Pegula steadied the ship and got the job done.

Now that the appetizer has been served, it was now time for the main course, Carlos Alcaraz versus Frances Tiafoe.

Alcaraz got off to a quick start with a 2-0 lead. It looks like Alcaraz was double-parked and eager to leave, but Tiafoe had other ideas. Tiafoe would break Alcaraz to draw even at 2-2 games, and hold and break again to lead 4-2. Tiafoe’s next service game would see 2 tweeners from Alcaraz as he would break Tiafoe to get back on serve, 3-4. However, Tiafoe would break Alcaraz for a 5-3 lead and would go on to win the first set 6-3.

The 2nd set would begin with a break of Alcaraz’s serve. Looks like the time off for Tiafoe at the end of September was starting to pay off for him. The first hold of the 2nd set would belong to Alcaraz, after a trade of breaks, for a 2-1 lead. They both would hold their next service games for a 3-2 lead by Alcaraz. He would hold on to win the 2nd set by 6-3. Now, just like the ladies’ match, the men’s match would be decided by a 10-point match tiebreak.

Tiafoe would start off serving in the match tiebreak. They both held for 1-1, but Tiafoe would get the mini break at 2-1. Alcaraz would even up at 2-2. They would tie again at 3-3 with Alcaraz serving. Unforced error by Tiafoe, gives 4-3 Alcaraz. It would be tied again at 5-5. Alcaraz looked like he was in the driver’s seat with the passing shot up the line to take a 6-5 lead. Tied up again at 6-6. We are dead even. It’s anyone’s match to win.

An unforced error by Alcaraz made it 7-6, Tiafoe. Alcaraz had a sitter to make it 7-7, but he committed another unforced error. 8-7 Tiafoe. He would serve it out at 10-7 to take out the world’s number one. A hug and kind words at the net as the two competitors embraced. It was the first win over Alcaraz for Tiafoe. It does count in the standings, but don’t tell Tiafoe.

New Jersey’s largest city, the city of Newark, also collectively embraces our fellow African American Frances Tiafoe as a crowned adoptive native son in the inaugural pro tennis event, A Racquet at the Rock.

As an urban African American 60-year-old tennis player and Newark citizen for 40+ years, I’ve waited a generation to see this day. Thanks for the memories, Frances Tiafoe. And thank you, Carlos Alcaraz, Jessica Pegula, and Amanda Anisimova for making Christmas enjoyable for tennis fans. It was a jamming good time at The Rock!

STORY AND PHOTOS BY FELICIA LAGUERRE OWENS In the inaugural Pro Tennis event held Dec. 7 in Newark.
