ZILBERMINTS<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>WEST ORANGE<\/strong> &#8211; Being extremely good at chess means being able to play 25 games at the same time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wait a minute. Twenty five people at the same time?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, you read that right. Playing against twenty-five opponents at the same time. This is what Abhimanu Mishra, a 16-year-old grandmaster did very easily on Sunday, August 19, at the West Orange Chess Club.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The simultaneous exhibition was held at the Toby Katz Community Center, located in Degnan Park, West Orange. Through the simultaneous exhibition the West Orange Chess Club raised $500 to help defray Grandmaster Mishra\u2019s expenses. Mr. Mishra is the youngest grandmaster in the history of chess. As of this writing, he will be playing in a prestigious chess tournament in the United Arab Emirates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The New Jersey State Chess Federation (NJSCF) matched $250. NJSCF co-sponsored the simultaneous exhibition on August 19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As reported by Local Talk in a July 19, 2023 edition, Abhimanu Mishra became a grandmaster at 12 years 4 months. This made him the youngest grandmaster in chess history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Club leaders, including WOCC President John Hagerty, Secretary Bryan Cohen, Officer-at-Large Saptarshi Bandyopadhay, Treasurer Andrew Chen, spent months planning the event in advance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to West Orange Chess Club Officer-at-Large Saptarshi Bandyopadhay, Abhimanu Mishra is one of New Jersey\u2019s own. Mishra was born in Long Branch, New Jersey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Abhimanu Mishra showed up at 6:40 p.m. with four packed bags and his father. The teenager was greeted by applause. WOCC President John Hagerty made brief remarks. The simultaneous exhibition started immediately afterwards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At 16 years of age, Abhimanu Mishra appeared to have grown since he played at Westfield Chess Club in July 2023. Mishra appeared to be more poised and mature than two years earlier. Wearing eyeglasses, sporting a beard, dressed in jeans, sneakers and a blue sports jacket, Abhimanu Mishra quickly moved from one board to another, taking only seconds to make moves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Description of Simultaneous Exhibition<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Players were seated at tables arranged in a U-shape. All boards had numbers from 1 to 25. Participants were from many diverse backgrounds. Some were from India, Russia, China, and other countries. The vast majority of the players were men and boys. Only two girls participated in the simultaneous exhibition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The grandmaster player White in every game. It is traditional for the titled player giving the simultaneous exhibition to play White in every game. Having the first move kind of makes up for playing so many opponents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In board order from 1 to 25, the participants were Harold Colton \u2013 Max; Ryan Martin; John Harker; Advaith Muthu; Daniel Antalics; Guido Kampel; Andrew C. Chen; Delmari Ferguson; Peter Radomskyj; William Zou; Himansh Rathod; Devina Shah; Lily Xing; Roberto Castro; Edwin Vales; Tunji Emuleomo; Igor Vishnevetsky; Leo Vishnevetsky; Sameer Kuriyan; Clifton Holwell; Ezra Federman; Jason Bernard; Alberto Martinez; Mike Rodriguez; Zach Richmond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each player was allowed two passes, or chances to skip making a move. In a simultaneous exhibition the player has to make a move when the grandmaster appears at his or her table. Once a player uses up his or her passes, he or she can no longer avoid making a move. The next missed turn would result in a forfeited game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Andrew Chen, the WOCC treasurer, moved from table to table, writing down the moves of each game on a separate scoresheet. Given that there were 25 players, this was no easy task.&nbsp;&nbsp; Mr. Bandyopadhay, the club officer-at-large, helped Mr. Chen with the task of writing down the moves of every game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Typically, the grandmaster spends only a small fraction of time at any board before moving on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It appeared Grandmaster Mishra was using a strategy similar to the one at Westfield Chess Club two years before. That is, he played similar openings to avoid using up a lot of time.&nbsp; Unlike at Westfield in 2023, this time around there were many King\u2019s Pawn Openings, Queen\u2019s Pawn Openings and King\u2019s Knight Openings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three people who registered originally did not show up for the simultaneous exhibition. Adam Darack withdrew the evening before the simultaneous exhibition. Nicholas Bernard and Benjamin Bernard, no relation to simul participant Jaron Bernard, did not show up. Alberto Martinez took the place of Nicholas Bernard, while Mike Rodriquez took the place of Benjamin Bernard. Ezra Federman played instead of Benjamin Bernard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Elizabeth Tsugel, the sole winner of the 2023 simultaneous at Westfield Chess Club, did not play in the August 19 West Orange simultaneous exhibition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By 8:37 p.m. Boards 13 and 25 had resigned. Board 17 was mated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At 8:45 p.m. chess clocks were put on tables. Since Abhimanu Mishra needed to get to Newark Liberty International Airport quickly, it was necessary to complete the games as fast as possible. For this reason, a time limit of five minutes for the entire game was set. Mishra defeated Boards 1 and 2 very quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The remaining games had the even faster time control of 3 minutes for the entire game. Mishra played one game at a time, then moved on to the next board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Peter Radomskyj, the only master playing in the simultaneous exhibition, might have had a better chance against Grandmaster Abhimanu Mishra at longer time controls. However, in a three-minute blitz, Abhimanu Mishra had the advantage and won the game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mishra won all 25 games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following the simultaneous exhibition, participants took a group photo. Abhimanu and his father immediately left for Newark International Airport to catch a late flight overseas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>What players said about the event<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Participants were excited to play. Many expressed gratitude to Mishra for playing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Himansh Rathod, 10, wrote, \u201cFirst, I just want to say a huge thank you to GM Abhimanyu Mishra. Playing chess against you today was like trying to solve ten puzzles at the same time &#8211; while my brain was shouting, \u201cHelp!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even though I didn\u2019t win (okay\u2026 not even close!), it was still the coolest thing ever. I mean, how often do you get to play against a Grand Master who can think faster than a calculator?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Devina Shah, 13, was one of the two girls at the simultaneous exhibition. In her two page composition, Devina wrote, \u201cThe simul wasn\u2019t just about playing a grandmaster. It was about being part of a chess community that believes in supporting one another\u2019s dreams, the same reason why I started my girls chess club. I\u2019m grateful to the West Orange Chess Club for hosting such an inspiring event and giving me the chance to be a part of it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Local Talk republishes the interview with Hemant Mishra, Abhimanu\u2019s father. Was there anyone else who taught your son?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>HM:<\/strong> GM Arun Prasad and GM Magesh Panchnathan have played a big role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>LT:<\/strong> How many hours per day do you have your son study chess?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>HM:<\/strong> He works on all aspects of the games (about 8+ hours a day).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>LT:<\/strong> Is Abhimanu in high school? When I was 14, back in 1981, I just finished junior high, and started high school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>HM:<\/strong> He will be in high school next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>LT:<\/strong> Does Abhimanu travel a lot to play in big tournaments?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>HM:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>LT:<\/strong> When do you see your son making an attempt for the World Chess Championship?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>HM:<\/strong> It is far. The next medium term goal is to cross 2700 ELO and become Super GM. He is hoping to get that in a year time and try to become youngest ever Super GM in the world. Movement after 2700 ELO is a different ball game. Unfortunately, there is not much corporate support for chess players in USA and if is very difficult to move forward without that. I will keep supporting him as long as he loves the game and works hard. If things work out as planned there is a realistic chance to do that in next 3-4 years before he gets into college.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>LT:<\/strong> Have you considered writing a book about your son&#8217;s best games?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>HM:<\/strong> His autobiography is already published which has 30 of his annotated games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>LT:<\/strong> Does Abhimanu play on lichess.org, chess.com, Internet Chess Club?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>HM:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>LT<\/strong>: Do your younger kids look to Abhimanu as a role model?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>HM:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>LT<\/strong>: What do you believe to be important in achieving the master title (2200 USCF)?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>HM:<\/strong> Knowledge of all theoretical end games is a must. It helps to check some good books on middle game planning and having a proper opening repertoire (with limited openings) is needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Full Disclosure: Lev D.
