One of the world\u2019s most brutal wars came across American shores, not with the U.S. adding to the conflict, but attempting to end it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the past week, President Donald Trump met with the presidents of Russia and Ukraine – two nations locked in a bitter war since 2022 when the former invaded the latter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, President Donald Trump met with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Aug. 15 in Alaska. Putin was greeted by a stealth bomber flyover and a red carpet. The two leaders met for a few hours and had a brief press conference when it was done. Neither said a peace deal was confirmed, but both cited progress toward that goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, on Aug. 18, Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Washington, along with several European leaders. The meeting with Zelenskyy was far more cordial than the previous encounter with Trump earlier this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zelenskyy was calm and more friendly, flanked by European allies. Again, no peace deal was confirmed, but progress toward that goal was applauded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The likely conditions to end the Russia-Ukraine war would probably have Russian taking some territory from Ukraine. In exchange, Ukraine would get security guarantees, with Russia possibly getting a NATO Article 5-like response should it invade it neighbor again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While Democrat party figures had nothing positive to say about Trump\u2019s efforts, like him or not, if a deal is reached, it will save lives. Here now are some quotes from GOP leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Secretary of State Marco Rubio: \u201cThe whole thing was a big moment – unprecedented\u2026 After three years of deadlock and no talks and no change in circumstances, this is the first time where there seems to be some movement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent: \u201cIt was an incredible group to have in the White House, all led by President Trump. The culmination of that was a call with President Putin – and my strong belief is that there will be a bilateral meeting between President Putin and President Zelenskyy. That\u2019s the only way to end this conflict is to get the two sides talking.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth: \u201cWhat an honor it was to watch Our President forge the peace process today.     UN READY TO AID PEACE EFFORTS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    UN Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres has welcomed recent diplomatic efforts spearheaded by the United States towards a peaceful settlement in Ukraine, his Spokesperson said on Aug. 19 in New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    St\u00e9phane Dujarric was responding to a journalist\u2019s question about the meeting held the previous day between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, his American counterpart Donald Trump, and several European leaders at the White House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    It followed talks last week between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin at a summit in Alaska.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cIt\u2019s very important that all involved continue to stay actively engaged in what we want to see as an inclusive dialogue to sustain the important momentum that was created to bring an immediate ceasefire and sustainable peace in Ukraine,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Nearly four years have passed since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine and more than 13,000 civilians have been killed, UN human rights monitors in the country have reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Mr. Dujarric was asked if the Secretary-General had any comment on the possibility of a meeting between the Russian and Ukrainian Presidents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    While noting that there is much discussion around \u201cpotential dialogues or formats, location\u201d, he said \u201cit is obviously important that those parties who are directly involved in this conflict be able to speak to each other directly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Asked what role the UN could play in this process, he said the global body will be \u201csupportive and ready to engage in a role that may or may not be given to us based on the principles that the Secretary-General has often reiterated.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    When pressed about whether UN peacekeepers could be deployed to Ukraine, Mr. Dujarric stressed that \u201cany peacekeeping mission anywhere would have to go through the Security Council.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    WORLD<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    WORLD HUMANITARIAN DAY OBSERVED<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    With the news on Aug. 19 that a record 383 aid workers were confirmed killed in the line of duty last year, one veteran UN aid worker based in Gaza reaffirmed the resolve of humanitarians everywhere to save lives and relieve suffering, no matter how challenging the situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Speaking to UN News from the wartorn enclave to mark World Humanitarian Day, Olga Cherevko from the UN aid coordination office, OCHA, said that exhausted aid workers continue to show up for work \u201cday in and day out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Approaching two years since the start of the war in Gaza, Ms. Cherevko emphasized the commitment of her Palestinian colleagues, \u201cthe doctors, the nurses, aid workers who many of them have, lost everything and several times over.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    In comments in support of aid workers everywhere, UN Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres pointed out that humanitarian teams \u201care the last lifeline for over 300 million people\u201d impacted by conflict or disaster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Despite their lifesaving role, funding cuts are having a serious and negative impact on the world\u2019s most vulnerable people, Mr. Guterres warned, while those who provide aid are increasingly under attack as \u201cred lines are crossed with impunity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    This is despite the fact that such attacks are prohibited under international law, the UN chief continued, noting that although governments have pledged action to protect them, \u201cwhat is missing is political will – and moral courage\u2026Humanitarians must be respected and protected. They can never be targeted.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    From her base in Deir Al-Balah in central Gaza, Ms. Cherevko reflected on the nature of humanitarian work today and the frustration that aid teams often face when their lifesaving missions are delayed, preventing them from delivering assistance at scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cI think as a humanitarian, I feel powerless sometimes in Gaza because I know what it is that we can do as humanitarians when we’re enabled to do so, both here in Gaza and in any other humanitarian crisis,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cThe fact that we continue to face massive impediments for delivering aid at scale, when our missions are delayed, when our missions lasted 12, 14, 18 hours; the routes that we’re given are dangerous, impassible or inaccessible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Latest data indicates a 31 percent surge in aid worker deaths compared to 2023, driven by the relentless conflict in Gaza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The Strip saw 181 humanitarian workers killed in 2024, with 60 more fatalities in Sudan. More widely, violence against aid workers increased in 21 countries in 2024 compared to the previous year, with State actors the most common perpetrators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Worryingly, there is no sign that the trend is slowing this year, with 265 aid workers killed as of Aug. 14 this year, according to provisional data from the Aid Worker Security Database.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Aid teams are exhausted and \u201ceveryone’s still showing up (to work), but courage alone and commitment alone isn’t going to feed people, isn’t going to save people\u201d, she insisted. \u201cWhat we need is, again, a permanent ceasefire. We need political solutions to this conflict and a resolution to this crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    According to OCHA, most of the aid workers killed last year were national staff serving their communities, attacked in the line of duty or in their homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    An additional 308 aid workers were wounded, with 125 kidnapped and 45 detained in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cEven one attack against a humanitarian colleague is an attack on all of us and on the people we serve,\u201d said Tom Fletcher, UN Emergency Relief Coordinator. \u201cAttacks on this scale, with zero accountability, are a shameful indictment of international inaction and apathy…Violence against aid workers is not inevitable. It must end.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    On Aug. 19, 2003, a bomb attack on the Canal Hotel in Baghdad killed 22 humanitarian aid workers, including the UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Iraq, Sergio Vieira de Mello. Five years later, the General Assembly adopted a resolution designating Aug. 19 as World Humanitarian Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Each year, the international day brings together partners from across the humanitarian system to advocate for the survival, well-being and dignity of people affected by crises, and for the safety and security of aid workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The theme of this year\u2019s commemoration overseen by OCHA is an end to the attacks on humanitarians and civilians and impunity under International Humanitarian Law. \u201cWe urge those in power to #ActForHumanity,\u201d the UN agency said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    UNITED KINGDOM<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    E.V. DISCOUNTS EXTENDED<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Thousands of drivers and businesses across the country are set to benefit from lower prices as the government confirmed on Aug. 18 vital funding to support the uptake of electric vans and trucks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The plug-in van and truck grant currently offers discounts up to \u00a32,500 for small vans, \u00a35,000 for large vans, \u00a316,000 for small trucks, and \u00a325,000 for large trucks, and the Future of Roads Minister Lilian Greenwood has confirmed the grant will continue through to at least 2027. Grant levels for the 2026 to 2027 financial year will be confirmed in due course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    By switching to electric, businesses could save more than \u00a32,800 annually on fuel alone according to industry figures. This support is helping companies cut costs, expand sustainable operations, and build stronger supply chains, helping to drive growth as part of the government\u2019s Plan for Change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The UK logistics sector – which employs 1.2 million people and generates over \u00a379 billion annually for the economy – will benefit from this smoother transition, creating jobs and business opportunities whilst helping keep the UK on track to becoming a clean energy superpower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Individual drivers can also benefit from the grant, making it cheaper to buy an electric van and putting money back into their pockets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Future of Roads Minister Lilian Greenwood said, \u201cExtending these grants is another decisive step to power Britain\u2019s transition to cleaner transport while backing the industries that keep our economy moving, driving new investment in EVs and helping businesses cut costs and expand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cEvery EV on our roads means healthier communities and new economic opportunities across the country, which is why grants like these are crucial to both accelerating that transition and building a resilient, competitive economy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Commercial transport is responsible for more than a third of CO2 emissions on UK roads meaning it is crucial businesses are supported in make the transition to electric, building a cleaner future for businesses communities across the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The grant extension gives fleet operators, ranging from major logistics firms to smaller independent businesses, the certainty they need to confidently plan their electric vehicle purchases. This builds on the government\u2019s ongoing commitment to help businesses save money and get the charging infrastructure they need to make the switch to electric, after \u00a330 million investment was announced in July to install over 3,000 new chargepoints at depots across the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    With over 1.4 million EVs already on UK roads, more than 83,800 public charging points available and over 100,000 more on the way through the \u00a3381 million Local EV Infrastructure fund alone \u2013 as well as the new Electric Car Grant offering record discounts of up to \u00a33,750 off the price of new EVs \u2013 the government is backing British businesses and families to go electric by reducing costs and in turn helping to boost economic growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
