That was James Edward Pate &#8211; sharp-tongued, hard-working, and uncompromising. A man who raised his children with precision and pride. He didn\u2019t do soft, but you never had to question if he loved you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His presence filled a room even when he said nothing. That\u2019s what she said. She being one of my neighbors \u201cRoxanne\u201d Ginger\u2019s mom lol. Ginger happens to be her little dog. That\u2019s how we met. He told you, \u201cI don&#8217;t give a dang what Tom, Dick or Harry is doing\u2014this is what you ain&#8217;t gonna do. This is my house. This is my house.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s what I remember. But he said so much more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He used to say, \u201cIf you don&#8217;t like what&#8217;s going on in this house, that doorknob goes two ways. Let it hit ya.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>I\u2019d laugh, \u201cDaddy, you can&#8217;t say that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>He\u2019d say, \u201cYou&#8217;re not gonna dictate to me what you&#8217;re gonna do or not gonna do. Or what I should do. I get up, I go to work, I come home.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He told my brothers, \u201cHave yourself here when I get home.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>Every day. 4:30 p.m., the latest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019d say, \u201cWhat\u2019s so hard about being home by 4:30?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, they\u2019d get in trouble. All. The. Time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, with me\u2014it was different. They said I was his pet. His favorite. I was the first to leave the house, the first to have a grandchild. When I got pregnant, he barely spoke to me through most of it. He was hurt, disappointed, but he never said it. I was in my twenties and had moved into the apartment right upstairs from my parents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I needed it painted\u2014he painted it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I needed a TV\u2014he bought it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My mother was mad, \u201cYou done got her a damn color TV and we sitting up here watching black and white!\u201d But Daddy? Daddy came up to my apartment every day after work and watched his shows. Fell asleep on my couch. Ate in my kitchen. That was his way of being present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When my daughter was born, he told me, \u201cI\u2019ll take her around to the family when she\u2019s six months. Then she\u2019ll look like somebody.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>That was his humor. Because we always said newborns look like little old men until they grow into their faces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And when the cancer came, it came fast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>We saw the commercial\u2014&#8221;Cancer Treatment Centers of America.&#8221; My mother made the call. They had one in Zion, Illinois. They flew him out. He was already Stage 4 by then. Shoes too big. Feet shrinking. Not eating much. Couldn&#8217;t taste food anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He stopped talking to me. I didn\u2019t know he was still talking to my older siblings. That made me mad. Made me feel left out. When my sister called and said, \u201cDaddy\u2019s turning,\u201d I said, \u201cWe gotta go!\u201d But we were too late. We were literally packing, curling our hair, ready to get to the airport\u2014and the phone rang. My little sister answered. She didn\u2019t even have to say it. I knew. That was the call.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>Daddy was gone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was angry at him for a whole year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Angry he didn\u2019t wait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Angry I didn\u2019t get to say goodbye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That Christmas Eve\u2014exactly one year later\u2014I went to the cemetery with my daughter and our dog. I stood at his grave and said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>\u201cDaddy, I\u2019ve been mad at you for a whole year. You never said goodbye. Do something. Lift a shade. Knock. Show me you\u2019re here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Later that night, back home, I was with my sisters wrapping gifts. All the window shades were down. Except the one I couldn\u2019t see from where I sat. Something said, \u201cGet up.\u201d I stood, walked to the other room\u2014and there it was. The shade was raised. Exactly how Daddy used to raise all the shades every morning. About four inches. His signature. His message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I screamed, \u201cDaddy was here!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>They thought I was crazy\u2014until my daughter said, \u201cShe asked him. She asked him to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I knew he had come to say goodbye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even now, I feel his presence. Sometimes it\u2019s a chill. Sometimes it\u2019s a warmth. It\u2019s in the quiet moments when I remember how he always came through. How he taught me:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>A good liar has to have a good memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He caught me in a lie once. I had done about 11 wrong things, and I called him to save me from the beating for the 12th. He only asked me about the one thing I had actually lied about. I said, \u201cI don\u2019t know what you\u2019re talking about.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And he looked at me and said,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA good liar better have a good memory.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That one stuck. I say it to my daughter now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s what stays. The sayings. The shade.
