The councilman and the tower were arguing over whether to tow away a vehicle that was owned by a Coley relative.

The retired sergeant and Army veteran surrendered himself to authorities here at the Freddie Polhill Law and Justice Complex March 10 after learning that an arrest warrant was issued against him March 7. He spent overnight March 10-11 at Newark’s Essex County Correctional Center after being served the said two charges.

Coley has since been on Level 1 monitoring, including monthly appointments with the court’s pretrial services, making no contact with his accuser and surrendering any weapons in his possession.

Coley, one of “Orange’s Finest” 1994-2014, has his current term expire July 1, 2026.

NEWARK – A currently suspended doctor, who used to practice here and in Middlesex and Monmouth counties in 2023, has been facing at least 13 counts of sexual misconduct and related crimes from a grand jury since June 19.

New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin announced that Friday that a State Superior Court-New Brunswick grand jury had indicted Dr. Gurvindra Gohal, 57, of Woodbridge, on two counts of second-degree sexual assault, 11 counts of fourth-degree criminal sexual contact plus fourth-degree counts each of falsifying or tampering records or altering or destroying medical records.

Platkin said that three of the charges came from incidents while Gohal was a doctor at a Broad Street, Newark urgent care center plus five at a similar clinic at Perth Amboy. The two assaults were said to have been committed while at a Freehold township center.

Gohal’s alleged activity was first brought up by a Perth Amboy patient to the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office SVU office in March 2023. Colleagues from Essex and Monmouth counties soon joined in. The probe had also discovered the doctor adding a medical assistant being present in the examination room, when there was not, on insurance records.

Johal, who has practiced for 31 years, faces up to 10 years’ imprisonment and fines exceeding $1.5 million should he be found or pleads guilty on all charges. He is currently represented by Newark attorney Brooke M. Barnett.

IRVINGTON – Some of the 77 people who were displaced by a June 21 five-alarm fire here at 469-80 21st St. have returned to assess damage and salvage what they can from the four destroyed houses and another four damaged here by press time.

Township, county and state fire inspectors are meanwhile searching for the cause of the fire, which brought out units from eight other agencies and whose smoke was visible to passing Garden State Parkway and Interstate 78 drivers that Sunday afternoon.

Irvington Fire Chief Antonio Gray told News12 New Jersey that his units first responded to a call about 471 21st St and arrived to find it and 473 21st. “fully engulfed.” Flames had spread to 469 and 475 21st. The blaze’s heat had melted vinyl siding on 470, 472-74, 476 and 480 21st plus the plastic bumper, headlight and rear view mirror housing on three cars barked either in their driveways or curbside.

Newark provided Fire Engines 5 and 6 and Ladder Truck 11 to the scene alongside a unit each from Nutley and Verona. Further support came from Irvington Police, the South Orange, Vailsburg and RWJBarnabas-Jersey City Medical Center ambulances, the Essex County EMS bus, PSE&G and the Bell and Siren Club.

Several of the displaced residents and neighbors told WCBS 2 News that they had complained to the township about squatters occupying 471 and/or 473. Those two three-story buildings and 475 had been listed as vacant and not for sale. The eight affected buildings’ ages ranged from 1907 (471) to 2007 (472).

EAST ORANGE – City police detectives are looking for at least two people – one who had carried and used a rifle and the other a handgun – in the late night shooting of four people in a fast food restaurant here June 22.

Police Chief Phyllis Bindi said that her officers had responded to gunfire reports from 375 Central Ave. at about 12:29 a.m. Sunday.

Officers arrived to find four people who had shotgun injuries. They promptly sealed off the area with yellow police tape and called for local ambulances. It is not clear as of press time whether the injured quartet were targeted or were customers at the McDonald’s.

The victims were taken for treatment at Newark’s University Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. Suspects’ descriptions have not been released as of press time.

Anyone with information is to call EOPD Det. C. Pego here at (973) 266-5060.

WEST ORANGE – Township Council members and administrators are combing through what council vacancy resumes and applications they had received before 4 p.m. June 25 while you read this.

Township elders may appoint a successor to the resigned Councilwoman Asmeret Ghebremicael as early as their July 12 meeting. They may also grant that candidate the option to run for the position in the Nov. 4 General Election.

The prospective council man or woman’s requirements include being at least 18 years old, having been a township resident here for at least one year, is a registered West Orange voter and having cleared a New Jersey State Police background check.

This chain of events started when first-term Councilwoman Ghebremicael, citing health and family concerns, immediately resigned and the council’s June 12. meeting. Her term was to expire on Dec. 31, 2026 – which state law calls for a special unexpired term of more than a year be put up for a special election.

Should the appointee opt to run for election, he or she is to apply for signature petition forms with the municipal clerk. That prospective candidate needs to return with 75 verifiable signatures from qualified residents.

SOUTH ORANGE / MAPLEWOOD – The New York Police Department’s all point bulletin on a multiple car fire suspect intentionally reached the Maplewood and South Orange police departments June 20. The NYPD told both towns’ colleagues that they are looking for a 2021 Columbia High School graduate for the June 12 Bushwick, Brooklyn fire bombing that created $500,000 of damage to 11 police vehicles and adjacent residences.

Wanted is Jaki Lodgson-McCray, 21, of Maplewood, for climbing an NYPD 83rd Pct. gated parking lot fence off Central and DeKalb avenues at about 1 a.m. that Thursday. Lodgson-McCray was seen on security video as setting what detectives said were fire starters on the cars’ windshields, hoods and/or front wheel wells before running away. They told Mayor Eric Adams that they also found a torch lighter left behind.

The suspect – then wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, green pants, an orange backpack and a surgical mask – was recorded as buying an item from a corner store on his westward way. That person, said NYPD, changed clothes at least twice.

Lodgson-McCray, who was already in NYPD’s database, resembled the suspect. He had been arrested in connection with anti-ICE/DHS and pro-Palestinian disorderly conduct. In one incident, he is accused of portraying a Columbia University student to enter a school building and creating $1,000 worth of damage to a statue there.

Lodgson-McCray served as the South Orange-Maplewood School District’s alternate student representative on its 2020-21 Board of Education. CHS is the two-town district’s shared high school.

BLOOMFIELD – If you have a viable plan for 177 Franklin St. – the 1939 Art Deco South Junior High School Building – and you have access to at least $8 million, you may have your chance now.

Real estate agent Adam Zweibel, on behalf of the Hudson Atlantic Zweibel Family Group, put “Bloomfield Lofts” up for sale early on June 24. 177 Franklin is zoned to become a 122 unit multifamily apartment building with room for “community space, a BBQ/grilling area, a fitness center and a lounge.”

Zweibel places “Bloomfield Lofts” status as proposed and the sale type as “investment” for a reason. The project, started by Urban Smart Growth, of Los Angeles in 2021, has stalled for nearly two years. No activity has happened except for USG’s paying the quarterly property tax bill.

The township planning board approved USG\\s plan in 2020 and the Township Council a long term tax abatement plan in 2019. South Junior High had been vacant since Bloomfield Public Schools folded SJH with the now-Bloomfield Middle School after June 30, 1986. The redeveloper’s CEO and visionary, Lance J. Robbins, however, died Aug. 24, 2023.

It is not known whether Mayor Jenny Mundell will now consider buying 177 Franklin for a joint use with the “Bloomfield Tech High School” building it now owns. Bloomfield, who had bought the 1930 school after Essex County Vo-Tech’s decommissioning, has been scouting for its reuse.

MONTCLAIR – Those who attended Wiliam “Buddy” DeZenzo’s June 15 visitation here at the Caggiano Memorial Home, June 16 Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church and burial at Immaculate Conception Cemetery recalled how similar his last rites were to those for his beloved Annarita DiGerinimo-DeZenzo in May 2013.

Buddy DeZenzo, 93, who died at home here after a brief illness June 10, is best known as a 63-year Montclair resident and a longtime Montclair Fire Department firefighter. He was, however, a West Orange High School Class of 1950 graduate who seemed destined for Hollywood.

The Korean War and meeting the then-Annarita DiGerinimo, however, changed Buddy’s life course. He was an honorably discharged Army veteran who met the lifelong Montclair resident in the late 1950s. Buddy and Annarita got married in 1960 and moved here to raise William DeZenzo III, Joe, Andrea and Christina.

Buddy, in retirement, became a Verona public schools and senior citizens bus driver. He was a fan of Montclair High School athletics.

Seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren are also among Buddy and Annarita’s survivors. Memorial donations may be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and/or the Special Olympics.

BELLEVILLE – The Belleville Senior Citizens Recreation Center here at 125 Franklin Ave. reopened in time to help the township’s elderly with the heat and their utility bills.

Belleville Recreation, in its June 22 Facebook posting announced that its air conditioning system “will be fully operational and the building will be open again as normal. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work through this transition.”

Recreation and Cultural Affairs Director Dr. Leonard Averhoff had posted a “Closed Until Further Notice” announcement online at about 5 p.m. June 19. The posting cited “issues with the HVAC system and the upcoming extreme weather,” for the sudden shuttering.

125 Franklin’s reopening was in time for township and state officials to hold its scheduled June 23 Utility Assistance Day. Representatives of the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs and the State Legislative District, for four hours, helped senior citizens with their Low Income Home Energy Assistance program applications.

The center, which opened in 1970, is on the northwest corner of Franklin and Mill streets in the SoHo section.

NUTLEY – There are township officials and residents who were concerned over an ON3 proposal for a truck warehouse here at 275 Kingsland St. who have been feeling relieved since June 17-18.

Prism/ON3 representative Eugene Diaz, after listening to Township Commissioners’ proposed restrictions on “a truck depot” at their June 17 meeting, told them “don’t bother.” Diaz said that he, on Prism’s behalf, will withdraw their latest warehouse plan at the next night’s planning board meeting.

“The (plan) will be adjourned again at tomorrow’s meeting,” said Diaz, “due to the action the Commissioners are taking tonight to approve two redevelopment plans that will help guide the remaining redevelopment of the ON3 campus in Nutley to a more amicable and mutually agreeable use.”

Diaz thanked the commissioners and township administrators for “the last two weeks, working way past midnight to resolve an awful lot of major issues, questions and concerns.”

Prism’s warehouse withdrawal for a more agreeable plan may end some five years of proposals that had put Nutley, Prism and Clifton at odds with each other. Nutley’s commissioners had felt that the 10-years-in redevelopment of the former Roche Pharmaceuticals headquarters has been piecemeal.

TOWN
