{"id":9285,"date":"2025-06-20T12:42:00","date_gmt":"2025-06-20T16:42:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/localtalkweekly.com\/?p=9285"},"modified":"2025-06-18T17:22:28","modified_gmt":"2025-06-18T21:22:28","slug":"suspect-charged-with-shooting-two-minnesota-lawmakers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/localtalkweekly.com\/index.php\/2025\/06\/20\/suspect-charged-with-shooting-two-minnesota-lawmakers\/","title":{"rendered":"Suspect Charged With Shooting Two Minnesota Lawmakers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>WORLD NEWS FLASH<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"188\" height=\"129\" src=\"http:\/\/localtalkweekly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/World-News-Flash-logo.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4503\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><u>UNITED STATES<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vance Boelter, 57, of Green Isle, Minnesota, has been charged by federal complaint with stalking and murdering Minnesota House of Representatives Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband, in addition to stalking and shooting Minnesota State Senator John Hoffman and his wife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to court documents, in the early morning hours of June 14, 2025, Vance Luther Boelter put into effect a calculated plan to inflict fear and violence upon Minnesota elected officials and their families. Boelter equipped himself with firearms and body armor, disguised himself as a law enforcement officer, and drove to the home of Senator Hoffman. Boelter knocked on the door repeatedly, claiming to be a police officer. Shortly after the Hoffmans opened the door, they were alarmed to realize Boelter was wearing a facemask. The Hoffmans tried to close the door on Boelter, but Boelter repeatedly shot both Senator and Mrs. Hoffman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Boelter then traveled to the homes of two other Minnesota elected officials, still disguised as a law enforcement officer. Boelter did not manage to make contact with either of those officials or their families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Next, Boelter drove to the home of Speaker Emerita and Representative Melissa Hortman. Meanwhile, local law enforcement, having heard of the shooting at the Hoffman residence, drove to the Hortman household to conduct a safety check. Upon arriving, officers saw Boelter\u2019s car, a black Ford Explorer SUV designed to look like a law enforcement vehicle. It was equipped with police-style lights that were on and flashing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officers saw Boelter, standing several feet from and facing the front door of the Hortman home. Moments later, Boelter fired several gunshots into the home, repeatedly striking Mr. Hortman. As Boelter did so, he rushed into the home and fired several additional shots, repeatedly striking Representative Hortman. Officers provided medical aid to the Hortmans and attempted to pursue Boelter, who abandoned the SUV and fled, initially, on foot. Both Hortmans died from their wounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Law enforcement searched Boelter\u2019s SUV and recovered five firearms, including semi-automatic, assault-style rifles, a large quantity of ammunition, and several notebooks filled with handwritten notations. Those notes listed out the names of dozens of Minnesota state and federal elected officials. The notes often identified those officials\u2019 home addresses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A two-day manhunt, coordinated among federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies across the state, ensued. As a result of those efforts, at approximately 9:15 on the evening of June 15, law enforcement located Boelter in a field in Green Isle, Minnesota, approximately one mile from his family residence. Law enforcement officers then took Boelter into custody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe horrific, targeted murders of Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark Hortman, as well as the shooting of Minnesota State Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette Hoffman, have shocked the nation and united us in grief,\u201d said Attorney General Pamela Bondi. \u201cThese horrific acts of violence will not go unanswered: the Department of Justice will prosecute this suspect to the fullest extent of the law and if convicted deliver severe consequences for his alleged crimes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAccording to the charges, the defendant had a list of possible targets and went to the homes of public officials to conduct violent attacks,\u201d said FBI Director Kash Patel. \u201cThis type of violence is unacceptable, and the FBI stands united with our law enforcement partners to find and hold accountable anyone who commits such despicable acts. I commend all the law enforcement officers who worked throughout the weekend to find the defendant and take him into custody.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The FBI, Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, ATF, Brooklyn Park Police Department, Minneapolis Police Department, Hennepin County Sherriff\u2019s Office, Champlin Police Department, and New Hope Police Department, together with several other state and local partners, are investigating the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Assistant U.S. Attorneys Harry M. Jacobs, Bradley M. Endicott, Matthew D. Forbes, and Daniel W. Media reports indicate that Hossein Salami, the head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), as well as several prominent nuclear scientists, were among those killed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The strikes also caused significant damage, including reportedly dozens of civilian casualties. Airspace in the region has been largely closed and security forces are on high alert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additional Israeli strikes were reported late Friday local time as well as ballistic missile launches by Iran which have reportedly struck parts of Israel, including Tel Aviv.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rosemary DiCarlo, UN Under-Secretary-General for political affairs told ambassadors that the repercussions of the attacks were already reverberating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI reaffirm the Secretary-General\u2019s condemnation of any military escalation in the Middle East,\u201d she said, urging both Israel and Iran to exercise maximum restraint and \u201cavoid at all costs a descent into deeper and wider regional conflict.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She also noted that the military escalation came just as \u201csome significant diplomatic developments\u201d were unfolding, including the planned resumption of United States-Iranian talks in Oman at the weekend. Latest reports indicate that Iran will no longer attend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA peaceful resolution through negotiations remains the best means to ensure the peaceful nature of Iran\u2019s nuclear program,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe must at all costs avoid a growing conflagration which would have enormous global consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also briefing the Council, Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said his agency was in constant contact with the Iranian Nuclear Regulatory Authority to assess the status of affected facilities and determine broader impacts on nuclear safety and security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He stressed that nuclear sites must never be targeted &#8211; under any circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSuch attacks have serious implications for nuclear security, nuclear safety and safeguards, as well as regional and international peace and security,\u201d Mr. Grossi said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He stands ready to travel to the region at the earliest opportunity, he added, to assess the situation and support safety, security and non-proliferation efforts in Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is clear that the only sustainable path forward for Iran, for Israel, the entire region and the international community is one grounded in dialogue and diplomacy to ensure peace, stability and cooperation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr. Grossi concluded by offering the IAEA as a neutral platform where \u201cfacts prevail over rhetoric\u201d and where technical engagement replaces escalation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI reaffirm my personal and the agency\u2019s readiness to facilitate dialogue and support efforts that promote transparency, security and the peaceful resolution of nuclear issues in Iran.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking for the United States, McCoy Pitt, a senior State Department official, accused Iran of having launched \u201cunprovoked, direct and proxy attacks\u201d against Israeli civilians and of spreading of terror, instability and human suffering in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs President Trump has repeatedly said this dangerous regime cannot be allowed to have nuclear weapons,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr. Pitt noted that the US had been informed of the Israeli strikes in advance but was not militarily involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur absolute, foremost priority is the protection of US citizens, personnel and forces in the region,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He further said that the US will continue to seek a diplomatic resolution that ensures Iran will never acquire a nuclear weapon or pose a threat to instability in the Middle East.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIran\u2019s leadership will be wise to negotiate at this time,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><u>ASIA<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>MAN MIRACULOUSLY SURVIVES PLANE CRASH<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following global reports of serious adverse events in older people, the government\u2019s independent expert advisory body, the Commission on Human Medicines (CHM), has temporarily restricted use of a chikungunya vaccine called IXCHIQ in people aged 65 and over until a further safety review has been concluded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A London-bound Air India jet carrying 242 people crashed moments after take-off from Ahmedabad on June 12, killing all but one person aboard. The sole survivor, identified as 38-year-old Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, remains in guarded condition. He reportedly told journalists that there had been a loud noise around 30 seconds after take-off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The plane &#8211; a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner &#8211; crashed into a medical college about a mile from the city\u2019s main airport reportedly killing five students and injuring around 50 on the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement issued by his Spokesperson, Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and to the people and Government of India, and to other countries who have lost citizens during the disaster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He wished a swift and full recovery to all those injured as a result of the tragedy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to news reports, there were 169 Indian nationals, 53 Britons, seven from Portugal and one Canadian on the flight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials at the crash site reported that the jet had continued to skid after crash-landing, dragging along the ground before bursting into flames.
