{"id":3406,"date":"2021-10-28T18:20:33","date_gmt":"2021-10-28T18:20:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localtalkweekly.com\/?p=3406"},"modified":"2021-10-28T18:20:41","modified_gmt":"2021-10-28T18:20:41","slug":"tragedy-on-film-set","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/localtalkweekly.com\/index.php\/2021\/10\/28\/tragedy-on-film-set\/","title":{"rendered":"TRAGEDY ON FILM SET"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>TRAGEDY ON<\/strong> <strong>FILM SET<\/strong>: <strong><em>United States<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Santa Fe County Sheriff\u2019s deputies were dispatched to the Bonanza Creek Ranch movie set of the western \u201cRust\u201d when a 911 caller reported a shooting on the set.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sheriff\u2019s office confirmed on Oct. 21 that two individuals were shot on the set of \u201cRust.\u201d Halyna Hutchins, 42, director of photography and Joel Souza, 48, director, were shot when a prop firearm was discharged by Alec Baldwin, 68, producer and actor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ms. Hutchins was transported, via helicopter, to University of New Mexico Hospital where she was pronounced dead by medical personnel. Mr. Souza was transported by ambulance to Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical center where he is undergoing treatment for his injuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This investigation remains open and active. No charges have been filed in regard to this incident. Witnesses continue to be interviewed by detectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Baldwin, who is known for his work in film and television as well as his portrayal of Donald Trump on \u201cSaturday Night Live,\u201d tweeted the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere are no words to convey my shock and sadness regarding the tragic accident that took the life of Halyna Hutchins, a wife, mother and deeply admired colleague of ours. I&#8217;m fully cooperating with the police investigation to address how this tragedy occurred and I am in touch with her husband, offering my support to him and his family. My heart is broken for her husband, their son, and all who knew and loved Halyna.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0<strong>SUDAN BREAKING DOWN<\/strong>: <strong><em>AFRICA<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">UN Secretary-General, Ant\u00f3nio Guterres on Oct. 25 condemned the \u201congoing military coup\u201d in Sudan, saying Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok and all other officials, \u201cmust be released immediately.\u201d In a statement, he called for the &#8220;immediate reconstitution&#8221; of the Government, which is due to guide Sudan through to democratic elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Long-time ruler Omar al-Bashir was overthrown by the military following months of popular protest in April 2019, and a transitional government was set up comprising both military and civilian leadership, after a power-sharing agreement, that was due to lead to full democratic elections in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, according to news agencies, Sudan&#8217;s military has dissolved civilian rule, arrested political leaders and declared a state of emergency. Protesters have reportedly taken to the streets of the capital, Khartoum, and there are reports of gunfire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement posted on Twitter, the Secretary-General said that \u201cthere must be full respect for the constitutional charter to protect the hard-won political transition.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a full statement issued later in the day, through his Spokesperson, Mr. Guterres said that &#8220;Sudanese stakeholders must immediately return to dialogue, and engage in good faith to restore the constitutional order and Sudan\u2019s transitional process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The United Nations reiterates its unwavering commitment and support to the realization of Sudan\u2019s political transition. Any attempts to undermine this transition process puts at risk Sudan\u2019s security, stability and development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added that the UN &#8220;will continue to stand with the people of Sudan as they strive to fulfil their aspirations for a peaceful, prosperous and democratic future.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights also condemned the attempted coup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese actions threaten the Juba Peace Agreement and jeopardize the important progress made towards democracy and respect for human rights\u201d, Michelle Bachelet said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She called on military authorities to abide by the constitutional order and international law, withdraw from the streets, and resolve any differences with civilian leaders serving on the Transitional Council through dialogue and negotiation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI utterly deplore the reported arrest of the Prime Minister, several Ministers, leaders of the Forces of the Freedom and Change and other civil society representatives, and call for their immediate release,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ms. Bachelet also pointed out reports that the internet is down in the country and other means of communication are suspended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBlanket internet shutdowns contravene international law, and Internet and mobile services must be restored, as they are essential for people to seek and receive information, particularly in these unsettling circumstances,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>DEPORTATIONS<\/strong> <strong>CONDEMNED<\/strong>: <strong><em>CARIBBEAN<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A group of UN human rights experts have condemned the United States of America\u2019s recent and ongoing systematic mass deportation of Haitian migrants and refugees, declaring them a violation of international law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to their analysis, US policies have also deterred Haitians from pursuing protection including asylum claims and forced them to return to other countries, \u201cwhere they face an atmosphere of racial discrimination, gender violence and xenophobic violence,\u201d said a news release issued on behalf of the experts, on Oct. 25.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn expediting the collective expulsion of Haitian migrants, the United States is subjecting a group of predominantly Black migrants to impermissible risks of refoulement and human rights abuse without any individualized evaluation,\u201d the experts said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cInternational law prohibits arbitrary or collective expulsions. States cannot label all migrants of a certain nationality per se threats to national security, and all migrants, no matter their nationality, race or migration status, must be guaranteed the protections called for under international law,\u201d they reminded the US Government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mass deportations seemingly continue a history of racialized exclusion of Black Haitian migrants and refugees at US ports of entry, the experts said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Title 42 policy carried out by the US Government, initially under the previous Trump administration, has authorized the collective expulsion of any migrants and asylum seekers who seek to cross US land borders, without an individual evaluation of their circumstances and protection needs, experts noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When it comes to relevant international law, the US has ratified the 1967 Protocol Relating to the Status of Refugees, the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), and the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0<strong>BYE BYE BOILERS<\/strong>: <strong><em>EUROPE<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Low carbon more efficient heating systems such as heat pumps will be no more expensive &#8211; and in many cases may end up cheaper &#8211; to buy and run than gas boilers, under government plans being announced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through the Heat and Buildings Strategy, the government has set out its plan to incentivize people to install low-carbon heating systems in a simple, fair and cheap way as they come to replace their old boilers over the coming decade. This will significantly reduce the UK\u2019s dependency on fossil fuels and exposure to global price spikes, whilst supporting up to 240,000 jobs across the UK by 2035.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">New grants of \u00a35,000 will be available from April next year to encourage homeowners to install more efficient, low carbon heating systems &#8211; like heat pumps that do not emit carbon when used &#8211; through a new \u00a3450 million 3-year Boiler Upgrade Scheme. These grants mean people choosing to install a heat pump will pay a similar amount as if they were installing a traditional gas boiler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The \u00a3450 million Boiler Upgrade Scheme is part of more than \u00a33.9 billion of new funding being announced today by the government for decarbonizing heat and buildings. This will fund the next 3 years of investment through the Social Housing Decarbonization Fund, the Home Upgrade Grant scheme, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme and the Heat Networks Transformation Program and reducing carbon emissions from public buildings through the Public Sector Decarbonization Scheme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The government and industry will also work together to help meet the aim of heat pumps costing the same to buy and run as fossil fuel boilers by 2030, with big cost reductions of between a quarter and a half by 2025 expected as the market expands and technology develops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This will support the government\u2019s new target for all new heating systems installed in UK homes by 2035 to be either using low-carbon technologies, such as electric heat pumps, or supporting new technologies like hydrogen-ready boilers, where we are confident we can supply clean, green fuel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No-one will be forced to remove their existing fossil fuel boilers, with this transition of the next 14 years seeing the UK\u2019s households gradually move away from fossil fuel boilers in an affordable, practical and fair way, enabling homeowners to easily make these green choices when the time comes to replace their old boiler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prime Minister Boris Johnson said, \u201cAs we clean up the way we heat our homes over the next decade, we are backing our brilliant innovators to make clean technology like heat pumps as cheap to buy and run as gas boilers &#8211; supporting thousands of green jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur new grants will help homeowners make the switch sooner, without costing them extra, so that going green is the better choice when their boiler needs an upgrade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Heat and Buildings Strategy sets out how we are taking \u2018no-regrets\u2019 action now, particularly on heat pumps, whilst supporting ongoing trials and other research and innovation on our future heating systems, including on hydrogen. We will make a decision on the potential role for hydrogen in heating buildings by 2026, by learning from our Hydrogen Village pilot.
