{"id":1921,"date":"2020-12-15T20:12:54","date_gmt":"2020-12-15T20:12:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localtalkweekly.com\/?p=1921"},"modified":"2020-12-15T20:13:05","modified_gmt":"2020-12-15T20:13:05","slug":"boko-haram-kidnaps-300-children","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/localtalkweekly.com\/index.php\/2020\/12\/15\/boko-haram-kidnaps-300-children\/","title":{"rendered":"BOKO HARAM KIDNAPS 300 CHILDREN"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>UN <\/strong>&#8211; The United Nations Secretary-General has called for the \u201cimmediate and unconditional\u201d release of hundreds of boys, believed abducted by suspected bandits, after an attack on their school in northwest Nigeria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than three hundred children are reported to be still missing, with many feared abducted, after armed gunmen stormed the all-boys Government Science Secondary School in Kankara, Katsina state, late Friday evening (local time, Dec. 11).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres strongly condemned the attack and called for the children\u2019s safe return to their families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe reiterates that attacks on schools and other educational facilities constitute a grave violation of human rights. He urges the Nigerian authorities to bring those responsible for this act to justice,\u201d the statement added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, the UN Children\u2019s Fund (UNICEF) also denounced the attack and called for the children\u2019s release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a separate statement, Marie-Pierre Poirier, UNICEF Regional Director for West and Central Africa, said that the violence \u201cis a grim reminder\u201d that abductions of children and widespread grave violations of children\u2019s rights continue to take place in northern Nigeria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cChildren should feel safe at home, in schools and in their playgrounds at all times. We stand with the families of the missing children and the community affected by this horrifying event.\u201d In February 2018, Boko Haram insurgents kidnapped over 100 schoolgirls from a secondary school in the town of Dapchi, in northeast Nigeria. Six years ago, in 2014, the militant group abducted 276 girls from their school dormitory in Chibok.
