The newly formed Bloomfield for Progress slate won one of three ward council nominations.

June 2’s takeaway off the still-unofficial results is that enough voters want change and will go “off the party line.”

Essex County Clerk Chis Durkin’s Elections Division, however, posted that 71,195 ballots were cast from a county-wide registration pool of 563,000. The turnout ending at 8 p.m. that Tuesday turnout translates to 12.65 percent. 12.65 is slightly better than the 10.58 percent turnout for the June 6, 2023 primaries.

“Local Talk” is meanwhile awaiting an age breakdown of 16- and 17- year-old voters. It appears that state law allows high school upperclassmen to vote in primary elections like they have had in April boards of education elections since last year.

The below results, as posted by essexclerk.com 3:30 p.m. June 5, are unofficial until certification. Only Essex County results are shown among the four U.S. Congress races.

The below are for the Democratic and Republican primaries. Candidates who run as “minor party” or independent were to have filed their petitions for the Nov. 2 General Election ballot on or before 4 p.m. June 2.

U.S. CONGRESS

Nov. 2’s General Election ballot for SENATOR is shaping up to be between incumbent Democrat Cory A. Booker and Republican challenger Justin Murphy.

Booker, of Newark, who has ECDC endorsement, drew all 59,774 party votes from among all 22 Essex County municipalities.

Murphy, who ran on his own “American Conservative Republican” banner, was the top vote-getter among a Republican field of four candidates. The former Tabernacle Committeeman amassed 2,591 votes or 43.40 percent of the vote.

Former News 12 New Jersey reporter Alex Zdan, of Robbinsville, “Endorsed by the Essex County Republican Party,” placed second at 2,135 or 35.68 percent.

Richard Tabor, “By the People, for the People,” of Elizabeth, tallied third at 884 or 13.77 percent. Englewood doctor Robert S. Lebovics, “America First Always,” logged 374 or 6.25.

HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

The regular 11th CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT primary, like the special primary earlier this year, appears to be a “Wash, Rinse, Repeat” for voters between incumbent Democrat Analilia Mejia and challenging Republican Joseph Hathaway.

Meija, of Glen Ridge, demolished her three in-party challengers. The now-ECDC-backed candidate mustered 25,776 or 81.47.

Joseph B. Lewis II, “Fighting to Fix a Broken Economy, of Montville was second at 2,468 or 7.80. Chatham Borough Councilman Justin Strickland, “Universal Healthcare and Term Limits,” was next at 1,801 or 5.65. Former Morristown mayor Donald Cristello, “Democrat with Experience Municipal Business, International,” completed the field at 1,93 or 5.04.

The GOP voters’ nod, like in the special election primary, went to former Randolph mayor Hathaway. The “Endorsed by Essex County Republican Party” runner hauled all 4,254 votes.

The 10th CD General Election ballot now appears to be a joust between incumbent Democrat LaMonica McIver and Republican challenger Carmen Bucco.

Participating party voters selected McIver, of Newark, by a near nine-to-one ratio over West Orange’s Lawrence Porter. McIver (ECDC) mustered 21,383 or 89.24 over Porter’s 2,579 or 10.76. Nutley native Bucco received all 1,223 votes for the GOP nod.

Eighth CD Democrats renominated incumbent Rob Menendez over in=party challender Mussab Ali by a three-to-one ratio.

Menendez, of Union City and ECDC supported, drew 1,906 or 74.92. Former Jersey City Board of Education President and “Choose Change” runner Ali amassed 638 or 25.08.

There were no Republicans posted on the ballot.

ESSEX COUNTY

The ESSEX COUNTY EXECUTIVE General Election has formed into a duel between incumbent Democrat Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. and challenging Republican Marizta Mathews.

Divincenzo, of Roseland (ECDC), drew 57,831 unopposed votes. Mathews, of Newark (EbECR) mustered all 5,445 votes.

BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS

Three of the four AT-LARGE Commissioners seats up for Democratic party nomination went to the ECDC slate – but the fourth was an upset.

New runner and Verona Councilwoman Christine McGrath was the establishment and June 2’s top vote-getter at 41,403 or 21.29. West Orange Fire Captain Abdur R. Yasin was second at 33,113 or 18.06.

Voters, however, gave former Maplewood Committeewoman Deborah Engle, of the Essex Reform Democrats” platform, third place with 33,513 or 17.23.

ECDC candidates Wayne Richardson and Shawn Klien were left to fight for the fourth and last commissioner nomination. Newarker Richardson, the sole at-large incumbent, received 32,796 or 16.87. Livingston Mayor Klien missed the nod despite 30,856 or 15.87.

Former Newark Public Schools Board of Education member Marques-Aquil Lewis, who was endorsed by Mayor Ras Baraka on the “Moving Essex County Forward” ticket, completed the on-ballot field at 20,777 or 10.68.

All four EbECR candidates got their GOP nods, with only the voting results’ pecking order to be decided. Douglas Freeman, of Roseland, edged East Orange running mate Demetrius Eley as top vote-getter by five votes. Freeman tallied 4,721 or 25.77. Eley got 4,716 or 25.74.

Newarker Daniela Ferriera Almedia was ranked third at 4,639 or 25.32. Nutleyite Shawa DeFrank received 4,243 or 23.16.

The five Commissioner DISTRICT races were all unopposed ECDC candidates on the Democratic ballot but with Republican challengers in two districts.

All 3,058 First District Democratic votes went to newcomer and Newarker Wilson A. Pichado.

Incumbent Second District Commissioner A”Dorian Murray-Thomas tallied all 9,635 votes.

Current East Orange School District Board of Education member Medinah Muhammad mustered all 10,418 Third District votes.

The respective Fourth District Democratic and Republican nods went to Leonard Luciano and Adam Kraemer – both from West Orange. Incumbent Luciano netted all 13,309 votes Kraemer carried all 3,221.

Fifth District party voters respectively nominated incumbent Carlos M. Pomares and challenger Frank Contella. Pomares, of Bloomfield, pulled 14,506 votes unopposed. Contella, of Nutley, netted all 1,580 votes.

MUNICIPAL RACES

Local council or committee races centered on Bloomfield’s Township Ward Council races where platform supporters can look at the results as a glass either partially full or empty.

A majority of First Ward Democratic voters renominated incumbent Councilwoman Rosalee Gonzalez over “Bloomfield for Progress” runner Stefanie Santiago. Gonzalez got 1,029 or 53.76 versus Santiago’s 885 or 46.24.

Second Ward voters chose a Bloomfield for Progress candidate in a three-way nomination race. BfP runner Greg Babula got the nod with 1,238 or 53.29. The township and county party committee endorsed Jason Martinez amassed 1,19 or 43.87. Paul Bomnica, under the Essex Reform Democrats banner, garnered 66 or 2.84.

Third Ward voters renominated incumbent Sarah Cruz over BfP runner Stef Bootwala. Cruz carried 946 or 58.0; Bootwala amassed 685 or 42.0.

No Republican petitions were filed.

In Maplewood, Democratic party voters chose the two establishment candidates over a third runner for the Township Committee’s two available seats.

Incumbent Victor de Luca topped the June 2 tallies at 3,714 or 39.35. Primary rookie and running mate and planning board member John Sullivan was next at 3,111 or 32.96.

Martin Ceperly and his “Moving Maplewood Forward” ticket tallied 2,614 or 27.69.

Municipal Election Notes: GLEN RIDGE’s “party primaries” for its two Borough Council seats came and went with zero results. Borough voters usually save their mayor, council and board of education votes for the November General Election – and choose between those who have or have not the Civic Conference Committee endorsement.

“Local Talk” was under the erroneous belief that there would be primaries for EAST ORANGE’s five ward council seats.

NEWARK’s June 9 South Ward Council runoff election results will be posted in “Local Talk’s” June 18 edition.

BY WALTER ELLIOTT NEWARK – Nearly 13 percent of registered Essex County voters decided on how much change they wanted in their
