ZILBERMINTS

NEWARK – Forty-two candidates are running for ten elected positions in the upcoming May 12 non-partisan election for Mayor and Municipal Council.

The election will be held May 12. A run-off between candidates for Municipal Council will take place on June 9. In order to avoid a run-off, candidates must receive more than 50% of the vote.

Incumbent Mayor Ras Baraka is facing his toughest challenge since his election to the mayoralty of Newark twelve years ago.

The mayoral candidates are Baraka, Tanisha H. Garner; Noble D. Milton; Sheila A. Montague; Nasheedah N. Singleton; Debra Salters; and Jhamar D. Youngblood.

At-Large Council Candidates

Four at-large council positions are being contested by 19 candidates. Councilman Carlos Gonzalez is not running for re-election.

Nadirah A. Brown; Christina G. Cherry; Malik A. Cooper; Josephine C. Garcia; Alonzo Herran, Jr.; Joanette Hinnant; Donna Jackson; Khalil T. Kettles; Maria E. Lebron; Lynda A. Lloyd; Pablo R. Rivera; Rasheen M. Peppers; Edden O. Rivera; Yusuf A. Shabazz; Lamont T. Vaughn; Altarik B. White, Sr., are all running against current at-large Municipal Council members.

At-large council members C. Lawrence Crump, Luis A. Quintana, Louise Scott – Roundtree are all running for re-election.

Those running for at-large represent the entire city of Newark. Those running for ward seats represent only one of five – North, South, East, West, Central – wards.

Sixteen candidates for the five Newark wards

North Ward has Anibal Ramos running against challenger Marcos M. Sanchez. In the East Ward, Michael J. Silva has no opposition.

In the South Ward, Patrick O. Council is running against six other candidates These include activists and local residents. AbdushShahid Ahmad; Lonnie T. Baker; Donald L. Jackson; Willie S. Jetti; Trenton E. Jones; Asia J. Norton are the candidates trying to unseat the incumbent.

West Ward has incumbent Dupre L. Kelly running against three other candidates. Muta N. El-Amin, Jimmy L. McCoy; and Malcolm X. Outlaw, Sr. are all running against Kelly.

It is going to come to name recognition and getting out the vote. Unless the opposition can unite behind a strong candidate, Kelly will win reelection.

Central Ward will see an interesting battle between current and past council members. Amina Bey faces off against former Council Member Gayle Chaneyfield Jenkins.

There are a total of 35 candidates for Newark City Council. Of these, 19 are for the four at-large seats. The other 16 are for the five ward – North, South, East, West, Central – seats. Adding seven candidates for mayor gives a total of 42 individuals running for 10 elected positions.

So what can voters expect? Possibly one or two new council members, maybe three. The race for Mayor will depend on the opposition’s ability to unite around a strong candidate.

Otherwise, there will be a divided field with no opposition candidate getting enough votes to challenge Mayor Baraka.

Why are there so many candidates?

People are running because there is a widespread feeling that the current mayor and city council are not doing enough for Newark.

In a speech made at the March 18 Hearing of the Citizens before the Municipal Council, Lisa Parker called the incumbents a “criminal cult that’s running our government.”

“Newarkers elect a clown, expect a circus,” Ms. Parker began. “We witnessed the circus at the number drawing for candidates. Those numbers were bracketed for Team Baraka candidates. We also witnessed the circus led by the Mayor’s brother, his bully crew and city employees to cheer on their candidates. A disgrace! What has happened to this building and these chambers? It used to represent decorum and democracy.

“Let’s talk about the snow removal, high pot holes, garbage, high rents, property taxes, no jobs for Newarkers, kids are not educated… the list goes on. This week (March 18) the news featured the deplorable conditions residents live at the Villa Victoria. The elected are more concerned about their public image instead of being public servants to help residents.”

Ms. Parker said that on February 17 there was a meeting at Newark Symphony Hall to hear the residents’ concerns.

According to Parker, “The Mayor, UCC Code Enforcement, the Health Department, Economic Housing Development and others attended. What did the Mayor and Useless Louis do to address the residents’ concerns? Not a damn thing. They promote developers, not people in need. It’s election season. They want your vote, but not help residents. The same landlords that contribute to their campaigns to get elected allows landlords to not fix deplorable living conditions. …

“…Newarkers, May 2026 will be the most important election for the changing of the criminals that are running our government. 12 years, 3 terms with Team Baraka. Nothingness. 3 strikes, you are out.

“To Mayor Baraka – 12 years ago I told you I was going to keep coming back to the council until you did the right thing by my people. I kept my promise. Mayor, your legacy is criminality, corruption, indictments, dirty water, dirty streets, incompetence, bankruptcy, a broken city. No one became mayor when you did. You didn’t move the city forward and I can’t re-imagine what you have destroyed.

“He doesn’t deserve your vote. Newarkers deserve better. Join me in supporting Gayle Chaneyfield Jenkins for a better Central Ward. #2A.”

Only time will tell what the outcome of the elections will be.

BY LEV D.
