LaMonica McIver&#8217;s assault charges over a May 9 scuffle at the center&#8217;s gates took an odd twist when she confronted Acting Immigration and Customs Enforcement head Todd Lyons on opposite sides of a Congressional hearing in Washington, D.C. Feb. 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">McIver (D-Newark) as part of the Congressional Homeland Security Committee, summoned Lyons and two other Department of Homeland Security that day to answer questions on how ICE has been conducting its apprehension and detainment in Minneapolis and elsewhere around the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">McIver, a former Newark Central Ward councilwoman, cited the deaths by ICE agents of Renee Good and Alex Paretti in Minneapolis. She also mentioned the death of Irvingtonian Jean Wilson Butus, who died Dec. 12 while in ICE Delaney Hall custody 24 hours after his detainment in Elizabeth, and of Keith Porter, Jr. who was shot to death by an ICE agent in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;You&#8217;re only here because public outrage has become so unavoidable,&#8221; said McIver from her dais seat. &#8220;You&#8217;re here because white people are getting shot in the face and chest while cameras are rolling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lyons was being ostensibly questioned on ICE policy and procedure. McIver, in her five minutes of questioning later in that day, asked Lyons of his moral convictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">McIver: &#8220;Do you consider yourself a religious man?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lyons: &#8220;Yes, Ma&#8217;am.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">McIver: &#8220;How do you think Judgement Day will work for you, given that there&#8217;s so much blood on her hands?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lyons&#8221; &#8220;I&#8217;m not going to entertain that question.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">McIver: &#8220;Do you think you&#8217;re going to Hell, Mr. Lyons?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lyons: &#8220;I&#8217;m not going to answer that.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Committee Chairman Andrew Garbarino (R-New York), calling McIver&#8217;s line of questioning &#8220;inappropriate,&#8221; paused the Congresswoman&#8217;s exchange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">McIver, however, continued with asking Lyons of how many other federal government agencies get funding while &#8220;routinely killing Americans and still get funding.&#8221; Lyons declined to answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">McIver and Lyons have since returned to their respective Washington, D.C. offices to work on their immediate pressing matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is not known how soon Lyons will have to search the proverbial couch cushions for change to keep ICE, DHS and Customs and Border Enforcement operating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Congress left Capitol Hill Feb. 11 without passing a separate bill appropriating continuing DHS funds. The action puts personnel from that department, the Transportation Security Administration and the U.S. Coast Guard working without pay for at least a week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">McIver, since Jan. 20, has been appealing to federal judges to dismiss charges of assaulting a federal officer on the grounds of Congressional immunity.
